    Not a laptop, but a true desktop. I'm debating bringing my mini itx tower with me; my laptop is flagging with my current projects and I miss my desktop.

    Anyone do this?

    Depends on what size PSU you have in it, but I tried it once with a small machine (650W psu) The inverter (1500W) I had in that truck was kinda unstable so I kept having brown-out issues. Now I have a Gaming laptop so I don't need the machine, but I will say when I used it, it wasn't very user friendly in the small confined space plus all the gear you normally bring with you.

    I'd be worried about taking mine with me, also running a 650W psu. While my rig isn't a terribly expensive setup I already had a psu and gpu die, possibly one causing the other, and don't really want to go through all that again.

    I would say no...not enough consistent clean power....unless you spend some serious cash.

    Something else I just thought of is the fact that many PSUs won't operate properly without a pure sine wave of electric. I can't imagine an inverter, unless spending tons of money, will produce that. I'm glad I thought of that because it made me realize that I won't be ABLE to run my system on a company spec'd inverter.

    @dca

    a UPS unit won't do anything to help if the power is not stable. It's not a step-up (or down) transformer converting power to one type or another. Great if the batteries die and you don't have APU. :p

    UPS requires "clean, consistent power" too, just like a desktop PSU, and frankly most UPS deliver lousy power supply when off the AC grid. Without good power, a UPS will constantly be switching, and won't last beyond about a week.
