Awhile back I was traveling to my college (Limestone in Gaffney, SC) for a visit and then travel to Andersonville NHP, Georgia. My group stopped at the Flying J near Commerce, Georgia. I was looking for their wonderful breakfast buffet. Did not see anything lilke that but I noticed that the tile design on the floor marked out an area that looked like at one time it contained the buffet area. I passed along my hunch to the waitress and she said, "Yep, Flying J's are removing their buffets".

    Not good.

    Does anyone know why?

    Thanks.

Some never had them, like that dumpy 1 on 435 in KCMO. It's a business decision, not enough profit in it so why bother with it.

They make more on the deli stuff anyway, is what they figure.

I normally run line haul where there are no Flying Js on the route. On a different run, I ate at two of them in a short time, business was slow at both of them, and the buffet was over at the first one when I got there.

Most of the full service restaurants at the truck stops appear to be suffering, just my observation and opinion.

I agree they do seem to be suffering a bit. We have a larger variety of meals we can eat on the truck now, and of course the prices are just as high in the truck stops as always. Customer service is another biggie, many of us simply wont pay those prices to be treated as poorly as most truck stops treat ya now. I'd rather microwave my dinner than deal with it most days.

My truck is old, the microwave has no power, and I slept in it about 3 hours 1 day this week, rest of the time, I got back and went home. I used to keep lots of food in my 12 volt cooler when I was running OTR, but ate at different places, maybe when I was at my destination. I learned driving a small sleeper Freightliner, no room for anything.

There are places where the food is reasonable, and service is good, but not usually at truck stops. I did enjoy those two meals at the Flying J's in Iowa, though.

I know several Flying J's shut the restaurant down at night and don't have breakfast until 7 a.m. .

Several months ago I was in a J don't remember whereone day buffet was there went back the next day it was gone.
I asked the manager he said they were pulling the buffet out of the smaller markets as a tast because they were losing money on it,maybe they finnally decided to go all the way.

    Aaww, too bad.
Never ate at the Flying J, so it doesn't bother me.
