upgrading cobra 29 ltd classic

What's the relationship between dead key and full modulation assuming the modulation is at 100%? Two times the carrier? That's why never understand when people say they have a radio that dead keys 2 watts and it swings to 40 etc.

 

If it is being measured on a peak meter it should be 1 : 4 ratio carrier to peak.

 

transmit 9 miles with a stock cobra 29? mine barely got out 4 on a good night, typically 1-2 is all i could talk with someone. i see frequent claims such as yours, a stock 29 talking with someone 9 miles away, on a stock truck antenna to boot. there's absolutely no way mine would have done that, or any of the other stock radios the guys i roll with are using. not even close. i have $150 in a radio i know will get out 3x what it did stock, im ok with that. i'm not a radio guy, i'm a truck driver. i wanted to hook everything up and use it. success. profound is solid in my book. i told them what i wanted and they easily made it happpen answering all of my stupid questions along the way.

 

Im glad you are happy with your radio that was tuned by Dave , at Pro- Found, as I said he seems like a goid guy. My 10+ mile TX and Rx with stock radios ( Bc 980, Cobra 29's) is not a claim it is fact. I do not post information on this forum to try and impress anyone I simply share my results and experiences that I have had over the past 20 years as a driver and home cb hobbyist. I have been to enough cb shops that I rarely trust the watt meter that is being used and I was merely wondering why a radio with 49 watt pep would only transmit 9 miles and still be fuzzy on receiving end, I have a Galaxy 99v2 ( in the bunk) 12 watt carrier and 50 watt pep that even with a subpar antenna setup will tx and rx 20+ miles all day. So in conclusion glad you, and others, are happy with pro - found and he helped you acheive your goals but believe it ir not 10+ miles is realistic with stock out of the box radios with good antenna setup.

 

I am just curious how a radio with one mosfet final is able to acheive as many pep watts as say a Galaxy 99v2 or a General Lee which both have dual mosfet finals ?

 

Parked at the Loves in Oglesby IL ( I39 mm 54) turned on Cobra 29 chrome ltd ( 5watts pep 20 watts) asked for morning radio check got a reply from driver at the 66mm, again not trying to impress anyone just stating fact.

 

Upgrade your antenna and coax(lowest SWR you can get) before you upgrade radio. This will get you out further and you'll be able to hear better as well.

 

Well freebeertomorrow stated in his post that he had a Wilson 2000 antenna and decent coax, however he didnt say where his mounting position was, on what kind of truck, and what his swr was, so those factors may have influenced stock radio performance and if they are still the same will affect tx and rx of radio after supertune.

 

mirror mounted on a 14 mack pinnacle day cab. swr 1.2-1.5. i never cut the antenna to even it out. i used an astatic swr meter. surprisingly it was identical to what my radio said.

 

Sounds like your antenna system is good, my guess would be if you were to talk to a trusted source on a channel other than 19, where it was quiet, you would probably be able to transmit and receive further than what you are now. If indeed that radio does 49 watts and lets say carrier is set at 6 watts and limiter is removed that means you are probably around 130% modulation and if you are longwinded, keep an eye out for excessive heat buildup internally that could cause problems, you have to realize that radios that come factory ready to put out 40 to 50 watts also come with a factory heat sink to dissapate heat, a Cobra 29 doesnt have one.
