Have been working for rumpke for 5 months now and gotta say I love the gig. Tried otr driving after cdl school but that didnt work out too well for me sadly. While driving a garbage truck is nothing like a semi it does have its own unique challenges. Mostly stupid people and going places never designed for trucks. I drive a basic rear load garbage truck, lowest on the ladder. But if you put a couple years in you move on to a front loader or roll off truck. Pays great and you can more or less get all the hours you want up to sixty. Now this is just my experience so far but as long as you get the job done each day and didnt take out a mail box, no one gives you any stick. You have your set routes each day of the week with about 400 stops on average. Youll work in whatever conditions mother nature comes up with. Yes the trash is nasty but believe it or not you get used to it. Days start around 3am, you grab your dvir and keys..pretrip and roll out at 3:40. (Soonest they'll let us leave the landfill) . You drive to your route and start throwing some garbage. It did take some getting used to driving from the right side standing up! Each route usually has some dumpsters you get with the winch..just sucks where they put em. After youve got all your route you check in with your foreman and go to the landfill to dump. Thats it...home by 9am most days and always paid for 8 even if you only work 5. Now for the bad points of the job. As I mentioned before..stupid people who nearly run you over 50 times a day. They love to tell you your number one, just with the wrong finger. Backing down private drives is without a doubt the worst part of the job. Very little room and lots of twists and curves. Just wanted to post my thoughts for anyone whos thought about doing this career. I know its not real truck driving but it honestly is a good job. Theres always trash out there! Some people look down on it ..say it's a disgusting job and yeah it is. Its garbage what were you really expecting? All jobs have their down sides but overall id say go for it if youve considered this. It is very physical and demanding though but once your bodys used to it its a great workout. If anyone has any questions or whats more clarity id be happy to answer as best I can.

I worked a trash truck gig for Rumpke out of Dayton and let me tell you, the pay sucked! The routes were not bad but the management sucked as well. I did hear the one in Cincinatti was union, had great pay, routes and hours.

OK, you roll out of the yard at 340 am and are home at 9 am and do 400 stops ? Incliding dumping at the landfill ?

How does the pre employment steps go -
I used to drive a rear-load garbage truck... One hard trucking job that doesn't pay well! I'll never do garbage again unless I lose some weight..
There is no way you're back by 9am.. no way, unless you've been there for 10, 15 years and have a cake route in a few subdivisions. Even then.. 9am? I don't think so. When you get your route done if someone needs help(they usually do) you go help them. -
