I'm brand new to trucking! I'm in my 40's and have never worked in anything trucking related. I graduate in a week from private cdl school and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with any experience at this terminal or S. Kearny if I go dry van. I'm going regional on east coast. My questions are do u really get home time here or is that a dream u get sold? How is dispatch- am I gonna be put in unsafe situations? And overall how are these places to work? I'm older and getting out of labor field so I'm also not sure if I should do tanker,I'm a strong guy but my body can't take a beating anymore. Thanks for your help

Kearny isn't really a terminal, it's just a drop lot. They have some intermodal work down the street but for dry van you'll just park there. Your training and dispatch would be in Carlisle, PA.

@Thull is a Schneider tanker driver, he can answer your questions about being a tanker yanker.

As far as the company, it's pretty micromanaging, you could certainly pick worse companies though. However once you get some experience, there's lots of local jobs in NJ.

Thanks for the reply. Are u from jersey? I really only wanna do local but it seems like Schneider training is very good. Also I can't bring a truck to my property. What type of local work here is good?

I live in Ohio so I don't know much about the local companies out there, maybe @Chinatown does. There is a lot of work pulling shipping containers (intermodal) out of the ports and rail yards out there. Also, you could look into doing linehaul jobs. I hear that Old Dominion hires students.

Schneider's training is 3 weeks, one week is out on the road. If you don't live near Kearny, they will find you a place to park the truck.

If you have questions on Tanker I can try to help answer them. I'm currently employed by Schneider Bulk hauling Tanks. I have been here almost 10 months now

I'd go with Schneider Bulk. Tanker work isn't physically demanding and the money is real good.
NFI Industries is based in New Jersey and has lots of local and regional jobs. It's a dry van outfit that's spread out all over the USA.
Watkins-Shepard has a terminal in Sayreville and hires new grads. Dedicated freight out and back.
Old Dominion hires new grads. Line haul division is best; it's just terminal to terminal drop & hook. Google to find the terminals and make personal visits.

I wouldn't dismiss tanker work over physical demands. The most physical thing is climbing up and down the ladder, carrying hoses, etc. IOW, you'll only break a sweat in hot weather.

As for Schneider and home time promises,, I did a year with Schneider Bulk about 4-5 years ago as a start (OC was Coraopolis, PA). I think I was an hour late getting home once. All other times I was early.

Not sure how it is now, or what every day life is like at Keasbey. They seemed as laid back at Keasbey as any other OC whenever I was there. In my exp, I thought it was a good place to start.
