It happens...when I was in the chemical business we paid drivers $50 per 10 hour sleeper berth logged between load and delivery points and if they were required to be on customer location and waiting to unload we kept them on the clock at an average hourly rate of $22/hr. One guy got stuck waiting 21 days...all on the clock. I've since taken early retirement but as I understand it the company still has the same policy in effect.

Many companies pay layover pay; that's the sleeper berth time. Usually it's a flat rate. I got $40.00 pulling tankers.
That's a question you should ask when inquiring about a job; "Do you pay layover pay?" -
Worst case scenario you got sent to a nice hotel. I had a breakdown that was a epic one involving 4 seperate tractors in two days until I finally was issued a freightliner day cab that was a snorter and considered big power. Because of the losses incurred during that breakdown at the naval base in Norfolk, I was paid a flat 10,00 a hour from the moment until returning in about 40 hours time. So that was a extra 400 dollars on top of a normal 500 net or so per week. The reward and pernament solution to that particular breakdown was my tractor (*87 COE) was sold and I was issued a virgin CH mack day cab that did so much better especially on ice that winter. I could not think of a more perfect tractor for that type of work in Altoona during ice storms.
I can only recall two times in which we were paid while waiting. The last time we were conned into rushing into Salinas CA for Americold to get this produce load asap turned into a three day wait fest as they gathered the stuff from the fields slowly. Unpaid. Burnt over half the fuel too. We wont do that again. Ever. Next time we go into a truckstop and they can #### well call us when it's ready, 30 minutes to get it wont be a problem. -
