Q: what are some of the differences and challenges that a standard flatbed driver would face when moving to step deck? Issues with securement, etc. thx

Only thing I've found that can be a bit more challenging is when you have to secure above the wheels on a step.
I guess I'll also throw in tarping at the transition.Macneil, KenworthGuyNH, kylefitzy and 5 others Thank this. -
you have to be more careful of underneath clearance such as railroads or any deep dip as the frame is lower on a step deck.
IluvCATS Thanks this. -
My company has dozens of brand new step decks at our terminal. No special training will be given. I was just told these new trailers will be integrated into the fleet and drivers will get step-deck specific loads. I like new things and new challenges. I hope I get one.
cke, Shock Therapy and johndeere4020 Thank this. -
They transfer weight differently than a flat because of the neck. Easier to over load the trailer axles versus a flat.
Also, a atleast 40 ft. bottom deck or longer is becoming more and more desirable. Guess it depends on what type of freight your gonna be moving with it.Last edited: Mar 21, 2017

The 53ft step is the most versatile trailer known to man. Lots more challenging loads and tarp jobs than any flat.

steps are easier to climb onto and easier to lift your tarps onto it with it being lower. Also, you can haul equipment that is too high for a regular flatbed. Get some risers and you can haul most linear product like pipe just as well as a flatbed.
cke and Crusader66 Thank this. -
May be easier to lift the tarps on it, but then you have to put the tarps on that tall equipment.cke Thanks this.

Waiting for it......
