I think a better way to approach it is to know what you want for a salary and what level of profit you want the business to achieve. Your pay is a business expense. From what I can see it appears some are calling these the same thing. After all expenses, this includes wages, if there is a profit, good, if not, then your model is not good and to continue in operation is going to fail eventually. As I research my next move going all in on my own is on my mind. I have my numbers down and what I expect my rate per mile to be. These numbers indicate I will see a profit of .15 - .25 cpm after all expenses, including wages. I could be wrong and fail, but I could be right. If what you are calling profits is also serving as your wage; this is the wrong way to go about it. Always pay yourself first.
nax, nordrunner, Bean Jr. and 3 others Thank this. -

It's also a good way to boast without having to prove anything, lol. I love the "I won't even get outta bed for less than $5/mile"
BoyWander Thanks this. -
Got a couple of partials today outta Iowa and Illinois both del 5 miles apart both window times. Got good money.
Posted truck in Memphis for tomorrow and got 3 or 4 calls. One gal from CHR wanted me to pickup tomorrow night and del in Houston Wed night. Told her she ain't gonna like my quote, but $1900. She said that ain't the highest she's heard, but she moved one at $1150. Lolwut? After I hung up with her I realized I had quoted too low anyway. Lol.
Another fella from a large carrier wanted me to go to Dallas, to a large retail warehouse. Told that guy over $3.50/mi. Too high but thanks.
Another guy from same carrier wanted to know if I'd pickup to go 300 miles south straight thru. Told that guy that honestly I'll be needing some revenue tomorrow...What do u think of $1100? He said that is a little too high, I asked couple more questions, then asked how high he could go, $900 was max, I told him I'd keep his number. Probably won't do that though. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I was looking to go further east for more revenue.
Hoping this week is good to me. I also can't wait to go home. I miss my dad and my siblings, niece and nephew. And TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT!!! My ping pong buddy and I are planning on one of our Saturday night practice sessions in his barn. BYOB. And I'm looking forward to taking my dad and my nephew out to a nice steak dinner. I miss them all. 8 weeks...But what an 8 weeks it's been. How much I've learned! And still have to learn!
Once you get to start thinking about home, you can't stop and it's hard to leave when you've been home. One of the reasons I committed to staying out this long, because I didn't want to keep thinking about taking time off when I have a truck to start paying for.
Goodnight, ttr.MarkH129, Knucklehead, bulldawg trucker and 2 others Thank this. -
@BoyWander ..I would make a make a positive comment, but then I will be accused of "cheerleading"...lol
While you getting non-driving industry knowledge, I'm now getting actual seat time (this is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE) with a local outfit doing some part-time truck driving....its time to make use of that CDL from my back pocket, before I buy my own truck.
This will be week 2 - officially doing logs (paper for company, while concurrently running my own e-log) to learn the "technical" aspects of creative logging...lol
So far so good. I dont really need the $$, but hey, someone is actually paying me $25/hr to just move an 18-wheeler around with no OTR experience...its like taking candy from a baby...hahaha
Im not even planning to cash the checks. I will prolly use that easy money for my downpayment on my truck...then the naysayers can start chiming in...BoyWander Thanks this. -

This week is going okay so far. Ended up in Greenville, SC and tried to hold out for big $$$ but it just wasn't happening. Finally someone gave me barely what I needed on a short 250 mile run. A large carrier. Arrived at shipper just in time.
There was a load going to Dothan, AL 350 miles, they didn't want to pay $980 like I wanted. Went down to $930, nope but we'll write down your number and call you if we need you.
2 hours later, at 3:30pm when they were getting desperate, they called back and offered $850, which was still low for me. Sorry, already booked.
Ill be in KY and was planning to go home Friday - BUT I might take another trip down to Memphis and see if I can grab a load to MI from there to deliver Monday. Want to keep this week going while it's halfway decent.
One thin that irks me, is when a receiver leaves a mess.
Yeah we'll just take out the 99% of what we need, and leave a bunch of broker pallets, or couple hundred grains of rice just lying all over and we'll let you clean it up. Oh, and we'll forget to put your push broom back in your trailer while we're at it. Or your load bar. Or your strap. Or all #### 3 of them!BoostedTeg and cnsper Thank this.
