I hear ya on leaving the dog with a stranger while you go through training, that was SO hard for me! The good news is, after training you will be together 24/7.
Make sure though that you go with a good company as opposed to the one with the quickest training solely for the purpose of the pooch. It will be hard on Mandy but sometimes I think its harder on us!![]()

Globe,
What companie are you with? do they allow dogs? -
Thanks for the responses, everyone, It's really appreciated.
As for Mandy's separation anxiety, she's okay, as long as I am there at the end of the day. When she is with me, she is perfectly fine and happy, a very well behaved dog and liked by everyone that meets her. She's just had a real rough start to her life so far.
A quick training period does have it's advantages for my dog, but that's not all there is to it, either. I'm not really comfortable about hanging with a complete stranger for weeks on end. Bit of a loner, prefer the company of my dog over people the older I get. With the accredited school I'm going to, I've heard that I will be considered as a somewhat experienced status upon completion, due to the amount of time the school spends working with students.
Long and short, she's my buddy, and I'm hers. We make each other happy. Can't get that from a lot of people you know nowadays. This is a chance to better my life - much needed- but also another adventure that we will share together. Put my life on hold too many times for kids and people I was with. Now it's time to start living my life my way. Hopefully y'all can understand that.
Thanks again, everybody. The support and information on this forum is wonderful and very helpful. Every company I look at online I have been checking what's said about it on here, taken with a grain of salt, of course. As every good marguerita should be. LOL
Laterz,
KatLive_Free_or_Die19018 Thanks this. -
No company that I know of will let you have a dog durring training there are only a few that allow dogs after training. I have seen a few that will allow dogs but require a big deposit and most of the time the person looses the deposit if they quit or get fired.

Hey everyone,
I am all set to start training at Hamrick School on 11/10/08. I hear a lot of people mention Roadway and Schneider on this forum. Anyone got any advice or criticisms, opions regarding Hamrick?
I also heard that with the advanced 244 Course I am taking, you have a slight benefit starting out, as some companies insurance will count the advanced training as some level of experience starting out. Is this true, or just bs from the school recruiters?
Thanks again for the advice, y'all. Keep it safe out there!

Kat, I drive for Watkins/Shepard, you they have a 30 day school with no mentor or driver training program once you graduate the 30 program you go solo right away. they have a 90 day probation period prior to being able to have a pet, then a $500 deposit, they will take that out of your check each week to make it easier on the pocket book. Hope this helps.

Thanks Wingrider,
I chose Hamrick cuz it's about 30 mins from where I live, and have to keep the nonCDL driving job I have now and go nights and weekends to school, cuz I can't do without a paycheck for almost 2 mos. So W/S school would be out of the question, and if they make you wait 90 days after the orientation for your pet to join you, then they will be ruled out period. There's got to be some companies out there with short orientation/training period and pets from Day 1 driving solo. I've got a couple of brochures and websites that say Pet Policy from Day 1, but that could just be recruiter bs.
Gotta make this happen, one way or the other. Have wanted to go OTR since I was 18, before I had kids and no life for awhile.
Thanks again, Keep it between the guardrails everyone,

Kat,
Could you share some of those company names that allow pets from day one? I know US Express (4 Weeks training) and Werner (275 hours or 6-7 weeks training, maybe longer according to others) Seems all the others that state on their website they allow pets have changed their policy with the high price of fuel and anti-ideling laws. I have found some other companies that allow pets, but do not take students.
There have been so many companies that have shut down their training programs in the last 4 months.Last edited: Oct 13, 2008

Hmmm, hard to remember all the companies and websites I've read about. I think Con-way, Celadon, Freymiller, usa truck, covenant, interstate, baylor, us express, cr england, epes, crst, ffe, westside transport, usf glenmoore, kllm?, Hogan, ruan, butler, hill bros, k&b trans, barlow truckline, boyd bros?, btc?, ozark?, heartland... don't quote me on those though. I've spent a lot of time on a lot of websites already, and my search has hardly begun, it seems. I have also been picking up copies of Trucker's Connection and Trucking 2000 every month at rest areas. Careers in Gear has a hiring mag at some of the local truckstops around. I paw over those, and then check the ones I like online. Hope this helps some.
