Like everyone says a Cobra is a great newbie radio...... When you want to buy a good one that will talk loud and proud.....Galaxy.

I run a Galaxy DX99V and have had it for 5 or 6 years. It is the best radio I have ever owned. I have also had a few Connex 3300HP and there make a fine radio too.

What ever you get take it to a good CB Shop and have it peaked and tuned and have the SWR set on your truck.

Cobras are a decent startup radio , if possible get FIRESTIK antennas ( easy to adjust swr settings ) and as previous poster note get it setup properly.

i dont wanna disagree, because it is all personal opinion, but my preference as well as many people i talk to are wilsons, if you want the fiber glass try the silverloads, they are also very easy to adjust and look great.
also if you are ever going to decide to get more power i THINK the silver loads will handle more than the firesticks

Do the SILVERLOADS have the adjustable tips like FIRESTIK? If so will look into them next time we need a set.

Had Wilsons years back ( 1970's) at the time they were basically the only good ones on the market and had good service out of them.

Yes, they have an adjustable tip, you loosen a screw with a supplied allen key, move a bar up or down, tighten the screw, and their ya go.... oh and dont forget about that "static reducing cap" you put on the end...

its a very nice feature. and they serve me VERY well and are decently cheap... anywhere from 25 to 35

One thing about off the shelf cobras and Unidens is that they are not all the same. Some work great while others work like crap. The best thing to do in my opinion is to talk to a reputable CB shop such as Sparkys CB shop . Com and get a radio from them that is peaked and tuned to work the way it was supposed to in the first place.

Don't ever fall for these smoke and mirrors games called Wackpack or Superwackpack, or should I say superhackpack.

I was looking at the Cobra 29 w/ night watch and weather. I was also looking at the Uniden 89 because of the weather channels. If I'm gonna be out there I wanna know what the weather is before I run into it. I hated not having that info when I worked for Greyhound and nearly got blown off I-70 just East of KC in a nasty thunderstorm. Does the weather channels actually over ride the regular CB when weather alerts go off?

Get a seperate handheld for weather stuff. Getting the Weatherband CBs is bad news if you are looking at any type of performance out of it.

No it does not over ride the CB when there are alerts either.

Oh the night watch CBs are fine for a short period but the Lighting (LEDs) go out in a short hurry.

    Just get a Cobra 25 or 29 or a Uniden 68 or 78.

    jedi_tev Thanks this.

I have a Uniden Pro 510 XL that did just fine with a pair of Firestiks. I also have a Cobra 29 LTD that is totally horrid, but I think it's because of the cheap antennas on the truck. One of these days I'll get motivated and put my Firestiks on it.... maybe that will make a difference.
