I used to get through San Antonio a lot, but rarely anymore. I'm in/through Pasadena fairly regularly, I'll have to check them out too, if I catch their location. I've got time, the 949 is sitting in a box at the house, so I'm not doing anything before I get home again, and even then I'll hook it up stock and see how it works first, before getting it opened up.

Do what's right for you it's your equipment your $$$$ and your time.............

It should work good stock, a proper tune from a good shop would adjust modulation level, set low and high carrier wattage ( deadkey ) , a check ssb function, but radio stock should have a 4 watt carrier and at least 85% modulation.NOLAdriver and bored silly Thank this.
-
If I remember right, peak should be 4 times carrier to maintain proper modulation, so min of 16 for a 4 watt dead key. Do you know what they max out at stock, so I know what the high carrier limit could be realistically set at before sounding like garage or needing to swap parts? Or am I totally full of crap and remembering long forgotten lessons incorrectly?bored silly Thanks this.

That radio should have the 520 mosfet final when set at 100% modulation should peak at 20 to 24 watts so a deadkey of 5 to 6 watts would be appropiate.NOLAdriver Thanks this.

Cb radio magazine did a review on the 959 and he stated that with the mosfet final he had a 7 watt carrier and a 28 watt peak output.bored silly Thanks this.

Appreciate the info. Also glad I apparently remembered something correctly, years later.
wolverine11 Thanks this. -
It's my understanding the 949 and 959 are the same radio, aside from the frequency counter and the layout of the controls. I went for the 949 because I liked the way the controls are laid out better, and I already have a frequency counter I can plug in.

Wow someone on this forum actually knows that.... AMAZINGNOLAdriver Thanks this.

That's how mine sounded back in 2004 as well so I think it's safe to say it's an established pattern coming from that shop.wolverine11 Thanks this.
