Do you remember what you made your first year as a fresh tanker driver? What companies do you recommend?

Yes, Quality carriers trained me for tankers and made aprox $60,000.
This is my 4th. yr pulling tanker and my pay has increased a few thousand every year

EDIT: as far as starting out try Scheinder, We have several drivers that got that 1st. yr. with them

Thank you..... anything you wish you had known before starting your trucking career? .... What would you have done differently? I am wanting to avoid costly mistakes if I can.

I meant at my terminal. You're right though, can make good bucks running local with tankers.

I would have gone into tankers right out of the gate, Theres some really good money to be made look into private fleets, Univar, Nalco, Nexio, airgas, ect... the list goes on.
Get that 1st. yr. under your belt, take it slow, easy and safe keep your lic. clean and great jobs can be found

For tankers, Schneider Bulk is a good place to get started.
Here's some others that hire new cdl grads, but not sure which hire out of your area. Keep in mind, just because a website has "experience requried" doesn't mean it's so. Apply anyway.
    Schneider Bulk
    Trimac Transportation
    Superior-Carriers
    Tidewater Transit
    CTL Transportation
    SVTN
    McKenzie Tank Lines
    Girton Propane Service
Submit applications during the first week of school; don't wait until graduation. Submit as many as you want. Job offers will be contingent upon you successfully completing cdl school and having required endorsements.

If tankers don't work out for you, try Magnum Ltd. which is refrigerated. Those drivers make $1000 - $1500 weekly; that's what they tell me.
Freymiller is another good refrigerated company.

I think it will be difficult. Don't forget even if you could drive the miles ever who you work for have to have the loads to keep you going. You have ELDs coming into all the trucking companies so the outlaws will be forced to run legal. So you won't be able to make up for slow week or slow shipper that hold a truck up for loading. If you got $0.36 cents per mile at 2,500 miles that only $900. If you did 3,000 miles a week that would be $1080. 3,000 *52 weeks would be 156,000 miles a year. You probably won't be doing that miles on ELDs.
Some company do have a guaranteed weekly pay. I work for one and we can only get about 2,500-2,800 miles a weeks.

Running as a trainer you could do it easy because they run then as teams. 5,000 miles a week *36 would be $1,800 but that 1,200 miles and two guys in truck. It's no easy job, I did that also it just not fun. Students wake you up and says they are at the end highway and on a two lane road and have no idea were they are.

The high quality companies don't just pay milage; they have good accessorial pays plus the milage. I only made .36 cpm pulling tankers, but at the end of the year had made $65K and some of the drivers made $72K because of additional accessorial pays and this was on ELD logs (electronic logs.)
Some tanker outfits pay the driver extra to fuel the truck, pre-trip inspection, post-trip inspection, layover pay, 34 hr. reset pay, detention pay at tankwash, and other things.
