Thanks guys. 8th note, very true. I'll mention every where I did work, I relapsed while employed at the real estate office and left, but I'm relatively certain that my old manager there would not mention anything slandering if he got a call on me, just not his style at all. Uber I was self employed obviously, and the couple months I did at subway just didn't work out. As others stated I've got my cdl license, and I did 160 hours of training. I didn't use a single one of the 13 points on my backing skills during the test, and my on the road portion was just about as equally flawless. I'm going to talk to a recruiter at swift tomorrow. I'm thinking of mentioning my struggle with homelessness and just chalk it up to a series of financial mishaps, I feel that this will help explain my lapse in employment and also demonstrate a good work ethic on my part as I have managed to get my own place and put myself through school coming from a place of significant disadvantage. I speak and interview very well, and I'm young (29) and very clean cut in appearance, all things that will hopefully sere to increase my chances of becoming employed. Either way though, I need to remember I've overcome A LOT, and things are certainly on track towards the type of life I really want. Thanks again guys. It's all very encouraging to hear and I'll certainly keep you posted.

If I have an employment gap I call it self-employment...
Would not disclose homelessness and financial troubles...
Don't sign long term contracts...you just need experience,in a few month you'll be able to find something better than Swift...Heathar and arkanstigers Thank this. -
Get rid of your drug use and homeless narrative. Could be a red flag for people who don't understand. Try to create a positive story by cherry picking the best things you've been doing. Im telling you this from personal experience.
Heathar, BigTennOTR, austinmike and 3 others Thank this. -
Some carriers care about gaps of employment, some do not. That statement was aimed at non-trucking employment. Speaking from experience. Many of the more smaller regional companies couldn't care less what you did before you came into a truck.

Sounds good. I'll use my friends company as filler for the majority of the last year as she will provide a good ref. as well as mentioning that I worked with her under the table hence no paper trail. I'm hoping this goes well, really anxious to rejoin the ranks of the working, resume some hobbies, and get back to living in general.

That is my plan exactly, won't mention drug use or homelessness, will mention my friends company to explain the last year of nothing on the books, and other then that I worked for uber and as a real estate agent. If my onły real worry is the prior employment then at least I'm in better shape then some, as stated I have my cdl a, no criminal or DUI on record.

It doesn't sound promising to me as a viable option to explain your gaps in employment. -
Honesty is the best policy. I had to provide an address where I lived for the last ten years for my job.
austinmike Thanks this. -
Heathar Thanks this.

All I am really saying is this. If you read the original poster first post, his first paragraph is completely unnecessary. Its too much information that isn't anyone's business. He should begin with his second paragraph. These days people think it's important to tell all of their personal hardships because it shows them to be street-smart and resourceful. I now argue that even in the midst of those problems he could find a list of "positives" that he was doing such as preparing for CDL school, helping family, or whatever he did besides drink and fail at life. I bet he could make a list. Personally, I like people who came back from the edge of life and are better now because of it. But there is a place and time for those admissions. Job interviews or orientation might not be it. Focus on the things you did that actually help you get that job. Internalize a new definition of yourself. Then when you explain yourself people don't just here about your struggles like chemicals and homelessness. Its not fraud. Not what I said.
