I have a dash mount for my 9" tablet that I keep open on Google maps while driving. The text such as road names is so tiny on it that I would struggle to use that as my only means of navigation. The voice turn instructions are nowhere as loud as my Rand GPS either.

I have also found that on occasion the tablet loses GPS lock while the rand is still locked on and functioning. It's also just more intuitive to use when looking for stuff like scales and truck stops while enroute. Just a couple taps on the screen that I barely need to take my eyes off the road for. I cant imagine that kind of ease of use on a small phone screen. Granted, specific navigation apps may improve that interface.

And one last point, my 1 year old GPS has resale value if I ever decide to upgrade to a newer model. Any money spent on an app is gone forever.

Let me help you out here.
They. All. Suck. Thanks for reading. But seriously, they will all help get you to that address you punch up. HOW they get you there, oh boy. Mine (Garmin dezl) has tried to send me through a 7' clearance tunnel, make right turns from a single lane road to another single lane road both 15' wide. In a residential zone. Sent me to Pilots/Flying J that look to have been gone for many years. None are perfect, but they can help. Caveat Emptor.

I use a 5yr old rand and it works fine. Rand has software i downloaded to my netbook and every few weeks i plug the gps into netbook and download updates to keep it up to date. It also has "tell rand" feature that allows you to upload changes to road conditions you encounter that need correction (such as speed limit changes or new bridge weight limit, or new road, etc). This feature helps them stay up to date with current road conditions which are constantly changing due to construction. You must also consult road atlass and i use google maps sat view and call shipper or receiver to consult on special truck route info if any. Some places have amazed me that they allow businesses located in places you wouldnt think trucks should be. Pa is loaded with such places.

I'm thinking about getting either an older rand or the dezl550. i know more about the dezl prices (for all the models and new/refurbished) than i know about the rand prices.....

I think i can get an older dezl model for 200 flat. with lifetime maps and 1yr manufacturers warranty. i thought that was a cool deal. for 100more i can get the newest dezl770 refurbished with 1yr warranty.

    I'll look into rands

Instead of actually paying 400+ for a gps if you have att phone service call them and get the 9.7inch iPad Pro it's like $27 extra on your bill and like $50 upfront make sure you have one of their unlimited data plans and install co-polit on it! Get you a tablet mount and it works way better than that rand McNally tablet! I've been using mine for about two years and no problems and of course you get all the extra apple ecosystem if your familiar with iPhones and MacBooks

i just have a subsidiary phone service. I'll be looking into going with one of the flagship services once I'm on the road and then ill probably be getting an unlimited data hotspot too. but i think id like a gps in the mean time because i don't want to be pushing my new phone to it's limits.

maybe a rand with dash cam since I'd really like to have a dash cam as well.

I use a Garmin Dezl 570. refurb off ebay. Works pretty well. Use google maps too if I have a fone signal. I used my phone when I first started but when you are out in BFE with no phone signal you are screwed.
