I only have about 10 months experience driving van, reefer, and flatbed. I just have to know why on earth truck stops like Petro and Flying J are using blindside parking spots? What could possibly be the logic behind this? If they're slanting them for space, why not slant them so that we don't have to blindside? I just want to know. I can do it, but it just seems ridiculously stupid when they could have just slanted them the other way.

Beats the snot out of me. I've been out here a long time and it blows my mind.
It's a real issue. I typically don't park in big truck stops if I can help it. and things like this is a reason.
Nothing like being asleep and getting your fender caved in by someone trying to blindside in by no choice of their own.KillingTime, grumpygor, AtticusRoad and 4 others Thank this. -
Depends on which way you come in. Go the other way and it's a driver side back. lol
Fold_Moiler, starmac, RedRover and 5 others Thank this. -
UMMM, they are not really "blind". Use your mirrors, have them adjusted right and you should never lose sight of the end of your trailer. It's not like the tortilla factory in Chicago. I guess the truckstops should dumb down for guys who can't drive the truck.
Highway Sailor, lagbrosdetmi, TripleSix and 2 others Thank this. -
Never park on the end either.Highway Sailor, AtticusRoad and Lepton1 Thank this.

Even a rest stops with 100% pull through parking, NEVER EVER park on the end.
Highway Sailor, RedRover, OPUS 7 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I said I could do it. I was just wondering why it's blindside. The point is they shouldn't have made it to where they'd have to "dumb down" in the first place.

Yeah I've actually seen a few drivers do that and handle that sharp angle like it was nothing. But like the Petro I'm at right now, there's not nearly enough room to do that.diesel drinker Thanks this.

Yeah. I've actually come out of the truck stop after eating dinner and saw my hood smashed in. And another time my trailer got a nice huge dent right above the drive axles.

I'm sure that there were codes, street access, topographical factors, the newt that breeds in the creek 4 miles away 2 times a year were all factors. Look, these folks that invest the millions of dollars into building a truckstop ain't stupid, it is that way because it was the only way.
Back, not that long ago, it was called off side backing and back then it was about as common as on side. It was just part of the job until the big 3 started their own training divisions and insurance companies took over the industry.Truckermania, Stage350z, Ooops and 1 other person Thank this.
