Hey Guys,
I am preparing to buy my first tractor and need to know what I need to make it road legal to bring back to my yard space.
I am buying the truck in Iowa but live in Maryland. What bureaucratic things do I need to have in place (insurance, temp plates, registration, etc) before driving it back?
Here are the conditions that I'll have:
Here is what I think I need (but please add to the list or correct it!!!)
- I won't be driving the tractor back but I will be the passenger
- The truck will eventually be leased on with a carrier
- I do not have my own authority
- I'm sure there should be other items here....
I appreciate all feedback on this concern.
- Temporary Insurance (something in place until the truck is signed on with carrier)
- Temporary Registration (does the dealer typically handle this?)
- Temporary Plate (I think this is covered by the temp registration)
- Temporary IFTA
- 2290 (Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax)
Buying First Tractor - What do I need to make it road-legal?

I'm sure more will chime in, but I'm still truck shopping and decided that I'm just going to get the classic truck 30 day policy and bobtail home. Not worrying about plates, registration, ifta or 2290 until I'm ready to get insurance and my authority. If I buy from a dealer, and they offer some type of temp registration, cool, but I'm not wasting any money on it. I will get a medical card, since I'm not sure my self certification would count bobtailing out of state.

Im in virginia. Va has a trip permit you can purchase along with insurance valid for 3 days. Maybe md has something similar.

You need insurance and temp registration.
-
temp tag and temp insurance and drive it home empty.
you cant get a irp tag or ifta without being leased or having authority anyway, there has be be a carrier responsible for safety in order to have a irp account. -
Why won't you be driving?
If this is the case, pay to have it moved to your location by a truck mover. -
Oh... And post a sign in the window that says "Not For Hire"
-
Do you need to run logs and stop by chicken coops when doing this (bobtailing home with a newly purchased truck)?
-
Get some temporary or classic insurance. Bill of sale and drive home on the weekend. We had one scale open and they never blinked an eye.

Insurance
Temp registration
Bill of Sale
Sign > Not for hire.
It is then a private vehicle no different than an RV.
