My company has a hand full of trailers. Some of which have trailer lights completely taken off and out of electrical socket. No bulb is physically in place where one could be, therefor no light bulb is technically "out" most of these are top marker lights not break or head lights. Can I still get a ticket from something like this? Question coming from Nc if anyone has links with info.

You need the triple marker lights on the back, the turn signals and brake lights and the license plate light on the back. Not sure if you need the side turn signals or not, maybe someone that knows this one can fill in. Also not sure if you need the front top corner lights or the rear corner lights.

If you run it all in daylight, shouldn't matter :)

As long as you've functioning turn lights and brake ones.

If they are extra lights that have been removed, it's fine. Just make sure you have the minimum required present and working.

If original equipment then yes they must be working. If add on's then they should be removed or else in working order.

Why is there always such bad information when one asks this question. Come on people the answer is is the regs. It's not even guidance, it's part of the regs.

You have to have the required lights, of course. Basically like @Friday said. Anything else is not required, and even if it is there it does not have to work.

Here is the FMCSA on it.... https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/retrieveECFR?gp=1&ty=HTML&h=L&mc=true&=PART&n=pt49.5.393#se49.5.393_19

§393.9 Lamps operable, prohibition of obstructions of lamps and reflectors.
    (a) All lamps required by this subpart shall be capable of being operated at all times. This paragraph shall not be construed to require that any auxiliary or additional lamp be capable of operating at all times.

Now read that second sentence. It's fairly straight forward that any extra lights do not have to work.

You guys are assuming that he is talking about additional lights outside what is required, I don't see that at all, I don't see a company adding lights and then removing bulbs from those lights.

A picture would clear up the issue.

    To the OP

It is what the cop says when he writes the ticket, if he said all lights, then it is all lights or if it is just a few, then it is a few but the real problem is you asking, you should know exactly what lights are required to be there and why but more importantly when to tell your company to fix them.

If it was me, I would not take a trailer that has only a couple lights working, they all work or it doesn't move.

I just had an annual inspection at a TA. I was concerned that they would fail the truck because one of the mirror marker lights doesn't work, and the chicken lights are disconnected. I didn't know which reg it was to show the mechanic that don't need to work, but, surprise surprise! He knew and passed the truck.

I would like to change the light, it's an led, but the mirror is good, and I can't find just the light assembly. I'm weird. I'll pay for the assembly almost as much as I would for the whole mirror, but I won't buy a whole mirror and through away a perfectly good mirror. I'm not superstitious, I don't like to throw anything away that is working.
