Technically it is 14 hours after going on duty. All hours count against it, unless it is stopped by 8 hours in the sleeper berth.

Yes your correct in one sense... On duty. If you start your day then sit for 8 hours it only gives you part of your day back, until you do the next 2 hours (completing a 10 hour break) the it gives you your 11/14 back.

One you start your day those 14 hours do not stop until your done driving for the day or your 14 is up. There is nothing legal that can keep your 14 hours from stopping unless you sit for 10 hours in sleeper, even then it's not stopping, it's resetting back to 14.

But the OP is not talking about split sleeper, or even the 11/14 rule to be honest, Tanker312 is asking what you would tell the DOT officer if they questioned why you were in the sleeper for 7 hours...

You can go over your 14 and your 70 doing pretrip and postrip inspections so long as you don't drive again. Legally you can log 24/7 work on duty so long as you don't drive until you take a long enough break to have hours to do so.

You can be on duty for as many hrs as you want as long as you don't drive past the 14/70 hr limit.

Going over your 70 is the same as your 14. (Even during pre/post trip) Legally you cannot do it, BUT, you can call safe haven in the event you have no place to safely shut down providing your company allows it. Safe haven though is only 5-15 minutes worth of driving. Enough to get you off the road and to a place where you and your truck will be safe.

To be legal and not get a violation, you (even if over your hours) still have to do post trip. As long as you are not driving and are in a safe spot, (unless DOT has a wild hair up they're arse,) they shouldn't give you a hit for doing post trip after hours. Cause at the end of the day as long as that clock is running, you can't start your day until you go in the sleeper and wait 10 hours.

Even if your company approves a safe haven, elogs will still process it as a violation and log it as such. (going over your time) which is why, when I call for safe haven, I keep that message on my qualcomm to show that my company approved me going over my time. BUT... the violation is still on the driver. DOT can just as well hit you for it. (most times they won't as long as your smart about it and not try driving 75 miles to the house)

I use safe haven quite often and knock on wood (or my thick skull) I have not had any issues with DOT running thru my logs.

I am no expert by any means, but I have been running with elogs since day one with Averitt, and I feel I have a decent grasp of it. But basically put, as long as you run legal on your paper logs; elogs will do the same thing, just without the pencil and paper. Same rules apply.

My experience with being inspected in three different states is once you tell them you are on elogs, that's the end of the conversation. Most DOT officers aren't familiar with them, and I even had an Alabama DOT just stare at my screen for a few minutes in awkward silence in my day cab, he was deathly afraid to even touch the screen. Tell them you got there and it wasn't ready, tell them you were binge watching smoky and the bandit reruns, it really isn't his business anyways.

shogun is correct... Most folks are inclined to just leave you alone on logs just because of that. But with the mandate coming up, I personally think a lot more officers are going to be in the know just so they can not look dumb when/if questions come up or violations are spotted.

Wow! Wrong! You can go over your 14 and 70 on duty, not driving and never be in violation. There is no such thing as safe haven with regards to logs, whether paper or logs. Safe haven only applies to hazmat. See section 397.5 and 397.7

You are correct you CAN go over as long as you are not driving, but on elogs it will recorded as a violation. (at least on the qualcomm system I use) But that doesn't mean you will get hit for it, as I stated.

As for safe haven, thank you for the info, and I will keep that in mind as I did not know that, but that is a shady area that just about every company uses. (Mine does) But again, as I stated, the violation for driving (even if running hazmat) is still on you. (the driver) Time management being what it is...

... and again... I am no expert and since I am the one who brought up more than was needed in this thread.... I think the OP has been answered sufficiently as I'm not trying to start or get into a pissing contest.
