Hi all, I've been otr for over a year now and couldnt make any real money in trucking. So i got on this thread last month and did some research and thanks to everyone on this thread I found a lot of info on where i can make money in trucking so I can feed my family. I already have all my endorsements. So i put in a application for saia, FedEx freight, and yrc. I went on a interview with saia last week, got a interview with fedex freight and yrc next week and this all happened this month. I know I got lucky but now I'm making my decision on which will be the best company for me to put in my next 20-30 years lol. They pay is about the same for saia and FedEx and yrc is the lowest. What do you guys think is the better fit in the long run.
Thanks!
FedEx freight or Saia freight, which is the better choice for retirement?

I have a couple of buddies that used to work for me and are now at fed ex freight. pay is good and they love. Only complaint is schedule. At their location they bid on start times then your take whatever is availabale that day. It provides a good change of pace but start times are weird starting out. One of my buddies worked for me and then was in management with me for a few years before going to there. He tried to get me to get out of management and come over for a solid year. He loves it there.
I also have a buddy that is a mechanic at saia. Been there 20 plus years now. Always talks about they treat everyone good and has tried to get me to come there for years.
I don't think either of those to are as hard to get on now as they were in years past but still here a lot of positives.
I would scratch yrc. Got an uncle there(ain't it funny how truck drivers have a lot of family in the bus and then all the friends you have are truckers lol) and he is waiting on the day he can retire. He has watched the company be run into the ground, up and down with a very few ups, over the years. He hates the place and says it doesn't matter what terminal.
By the way what terminal or major city will you be out of?
Good luck.lagbrosdetmi and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
Good day bulldog. Thanks for the reply. My terminal will be in Richmond Va. I heard they both were great companies. I heard nothing but great info about both. I checked out both terminals in person, they are literally right next door to one another and as far as pay, they both max out about the same from what the managers told me. There's like a .20 cents difference so I'm thinking I'll go with who ever hires me first.

what about time and a half for ot, both pay it after 40?
skinnytrucker Thanks this. -
Yes at the terminals in my area they both pay over time after 40

Who still has a pension that can help pad retirement along with your 401k?
-
Id go saia fedex and as a very last resort yrc.
Keep in mind theres a very good chance trucking wont be the same 20 years from now. Can very well become a minimum wage job all across the board if it still exsistsskinnytrucker Thanks this. -
I know 2 ppl that work at saia...both love it and plan on retiring there. I have an interview monday for saia

My assessment is that FedEx Freight is the biggest LTL carrier (which may have its benefits and stability), but is relatively stagnant as other LTLs (like Old Dominion) grow at a rapid pace. They also have drama and micromanagement which has led to union votes at several terminals. Saia seems to have a friendlier environment toward drivers, continues to grow and is currently expanding their territory and adding new terminals to their system. However, I've talked to a couple of their drivers who have issues with being recorded, one of whom has been talked to a couple times by management for setting off alerts. Just mind your p's and q's. The issues with YRC are well documented, so I won't comment on them.
Good luck, wherever you end up! -
