    Stop sign was later found in the woods. Authorities think someone had hit it previously and threw it away.

    Yup. The stop sign was for Belford Church Road but with it gone the car had no way of knowing it was supposed to stop at the intersection.

    The family was from out of town and could not have known that a stop sign should have been there.

    That does not change the fact that the driver was involved in a fatal. Nor does it change the likelihood of his having more than one sleepless night, wishing that he had done something different.
    I'm not saying he was at fault, just saying that this is something he will have to deal with, in his own way.

    That's the way I read the article.
