Plenty of cars do exactly that. They are called hybrids.

I was under the impression the hybrid car had 2 driving systems, gasoline and electric...
What I'm proposing is a gas engine just generating electricity then the electric motor doing 100% of the driving...
Does the volt do that?

Problem is it seems the masses just assume everyone lives in a location where they only need to drive 15 miles or less to get to work and shop for everything they need. Come to a remote town in rural Canada. The next nearest major center to where I live is a 3 hour drive. And when I say major center I mean a town that has more than just 4 houses, a church and a general store lol. Electric vehicles are getting there but they are still have to make some progress before they will be practical enough for everyone.

 

Until told otherwise I believe so. Heck, when I pulled the 1.4's from Flint Engine South the bol stated something like "1.4l Engine/Volt Generator" so I assume that yes, it generates electricity and the electrical motor turns the wheels 100% of the time. Of course there is always that saying about what assume means...

 

But converting fuel to power to a second type of power results in multiplication of inefficiencies.

The Volt is a "range-extended electric" car.
