Pick a company to work for before starting school.

 

There are different avenues for earning your CDL. The problem is getting hired with 0 experience. That's where the big companies come in. As long as you have a decent work record and no recent criminal charges you can sign up with all the big companies with a training program. Werner has a school. If you stay on with them for the required time, they will pay for your training. Other companies have similar programs.
After that hurdle you will spend several weeks with a trainer (they can have anywhere from 6 months to 40 yrs exp) earning your stripes.
Once you pass the road test you are free. I always say a CDL is a license to learn.

Most companies have ride along policies and make provisions for a pet which will usually require a moderate insurance fee to cover any possible damage due to the pet.

In my experience only about 10-25% of companies allow pets.
