I took mine 20 years ago, I was already familiar with trucks so I really didn't have a problem but here's something a driver at work told me. He said when he was looking into how to do it and someone online said just do it like a play, make a script and memorize it. Your not actually "inspecting" the truck just trying to pass the test. Might be something to think about. This video helps me.

Somehow I never had a cute chick like this to help with the pretrip.

Get into a habit. Learn the habit. Practice the habit on your own vehicle. Then it will become second nature.

Getting in a habit is fine and I have one but I'm not sure I would pass the test. To me taking the test has nothing to do with a real pretrip, I took mine in an 84 S2300 International that was spring ride and had no shocks on the back, she marked me for not checking the shocks. I said "there aren't any" she said "you still have to check them it's on the list" to which I said "if the next truck has them I'll check em". Like I said you just gotta pass the test.

I didn't memorize anything. No need to. You look at everything on the truck and tell your examiner you're checking it. Everything is right in front of you.

Here in Maine. We didnt have to open the hood at the time of the test. The examiner just wanted to know what you were looking for and where you would find it. Then my examiner asked me to find the driveshaft return spring (there isnt one, trick question, just to see if a student knew it was a trick or if some one was faking the test). I just grinned and he passed me on the pretrip. The alley dock was where I had the most difficulty. Here in Maine they want a driver to come around a 90 degree corner and park right angles to a dock missing two mercedes that you must navigate between. When you have done it correctly the cab is either at a 135 degree to the van or 90 degree. At the time I kept failing by forgetting to GOAL (get out and look)

All it is designed and do is show them you studied their manual. I read the book on the way to take the test and passed. It's really not hard if you just speak in the language they want to hear. The language is in the book.....NP

It's been a while, but I want to remember there is a pretrip study guide in most states commercial drivers manual. I suggest starting there.

Nose ring keeps her from rooting for truffles.
For those not familiar with with this:
A truffle is the fruiting body of a subterranean Ascomycete fungus, predominantly one of the many species of the genus Tuber. Pigs are trained to hunt for truffles by digging with their snout. When you have enough truffles, you put the nose ring back in to keep the pig from digging/rooting any more, until you want more truffles.
