i realize this will vary quite a bit but my husband is looking at 36 cpm practical miles empty or loaded with pay for many non-driving situations (detention, safety, even pay $$ on your 36 hour reset etc) Miles avg about 11k per month.

None of the 36 cpm comes from per diem.

This seems really reasonable to me for a brand new driver out of school but I'm really new to all this too so I wanted to get some input from more experienced drivers.

This would be mostly dry van, mostly drop and hook.

This seems decent, especially since it's all miles loaded or not. Is this a decent starting pay?

Seems like a good starting wage to me. And hopefully you'll see some increases in the next 6-12 months and maybe a 1 year longevity bonus. Your other hope should be ... will the 11,000 mpm pan out most months? The available consistent miles is the bigger problem at many starter companies.

When you say"we" are you talking about a team operation?. I started at .36 CPM, but I'm solo.

I get paid all dispatched miles, plus extra stop, detention, etc. I am satisfied with the pay considering the good equipment the company has and the miles I run. Junky equipment constantly needing repair would change that outlook.

I would say that in today's market, a decent starting cpm wage would be around .50 a mile plus benefits.

At 11k miles a month average, a driver could make a decent wage. Especially in light of what drivers are responsible for and the environment we work in.

Stop and think about how many hours an OTR driver really puts in every week for what is essentially piece work.

Most entry level drivers are making less than minimum wage, they just haven't figured it out yet.

Throw in the cost of living on the road and it gets really dismal.

.50 cpm sounds great but are there really companies out there that will pay that right out of school? I figured that would be more likely once he has a few months of driving under his belt.

One other point is that none of the .36 cpm comes from per diem.

36cpm is what all companies should pay their new drivers but many do not.Far as getting paid while on your reset don't know any companies that pays reset pay.
