I know new drivers are "supposed" to stay with their first company for a year to get a feel for it but the one I'm wanting to go with (which should get me next monday for cdl training) wants me to do team driving for 2/3 months (30,000 miles) after I get my cdl and the pay kinda sucks. Its Jim Palmer
I think it's like 4,000 I would owe if I quit but I'd like to get my cdl and go somewhere else with better pay and faster to go solo you know? I was looking at Western Express for example and says top pay in 90 days? Any recommendations would be nice.
I realize now I should have just gone with a school but I don't have time waiting for loans or grants from the government just need something soon. This is of course assuming I don't like Jim Palmer or my instructor/team driver but it seems like they're trying to make more with team driving for 30,000 miles seemed shady.

Did Western Express open their cdl school again? They closed it last year.
Other drivers with Jim Palmer say they make good money after the training period. You did some things right because Jim Palmer is real picky about who they choose for their school. -
As to your question..
It's just a loan, so as long as you pay back in cash or time you are good.
As for the plan, well it's not a good one. Get your CDL, then plan on working there for at least several months. As another posted, don't jump in cow crap.
Most companies that will hire a new CDL holder are the same. Usually a fairly large company with policies that make the driver feel like a mindless robot. Thing is, they are all that way. None are really bad, but none are really good either.Just passing by and austinmike Thank this. -
As a team 30k miles should take 5-6 weeks of easy-does-it running. Not 3 months. Figure 5k plus a week, unless they are throttling you as newbies. They may ramp you up to that, I guess.
It's all gonna depend on your dispatcher, freight availability, etc. Word to the wise, young padawan, keep your booty in the chair and keep rolling. Just don't be the guy who can pass everything but a truck stop and you'll be fine. 30k is nothin'. And six weeks is a drop in the bucket to change your life.dunchues, G13Tomcat, Just passing by and 3 others Thank this. -

Work it off or quit and pay it off, but don't leave it in the air, unless you want your good goy points to take a hit or even legal issues dealing with not fulfilling the contract, garnished wages, etc..

At least with Jim Palmer you'll be riding in style. Super nice trucks set up for driver comfort.
Western Express doesn't have APU's. It's getting hotter every year so that APU makes life much better.firemedic2816, Just passing by, born&raisedintheusa and 1 other person Thank this. -
Jim Palmer is a pretty decent outfit, it won't be long and you will be solo. They have some really good freight contracts that you won't find elsewhere. Give it a chance and listen to other drivers moan about the problems they have with their companies. Western Express over Palmer? Not even in the same class of carrier. You don't know this business, take it from someone who does...go to Palmer, keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. You can thank me later.
