Hello. A guy which is the owner of a parking yard, has his own trucks. says if i haul for him he'll pay me $3,000 take home per trip. reefer from los angeles to new jersey and back. 5 trips per 2 months. which is $15,000 every 2 months take home. Too good to be true? Is that a good pay to drive from CA to NJ?
Job opportunity. Too good to be true?

New to trucking. My cousin is the one that got me in contact with this guy. I have been practicing and going to new jersey with my cousin, in process of getting my Class A.
Really love being on the road and love driving as well. -
Well, for starters, the only way he knows what your take home is going to be is if he's paying you on 1099. That means your take home isn't what you really net. Start with 90 a year, then take off 13 some odd percent for your self employment tax. That's before you take out any income tax. Then consider that you are most likely not going to see any benefits, including not getting any workers comp, and you'll have to pay for these things yourself.
CA to NJ and back every 12 days is doable, but if you have multiple stops, or even just depending on how the pickups and deliveries are scheduled you might not be able to do that legally. You want to look into that and consider if you want to deal with that.
Also if you are running on a 1099 you need to look at any contracts he has you sign. Does he intend to hold you responsible for product loss or rejected loads? Possible damage to the truck? Etc etc....
Might be a good deal. Might be a lot of things you need to look into.Broke Down 69, tscottme and Steelhauler1246 Thank this. -
1099 company? Either way, GET IT IN WRITING!

I would have to speak with him to find out. He gave me $2,000 to go with my cousin on a trip to NJ and back so i can see how things are. I did not drive. He said as soon as i get my license i can start driving for him. -
Using round numbers:
Salinas to NJ is about 3000 miles each way. 6000 miles round trip for $3000 is 50 cents a mile. Rate per mile will drop with dead head and mileage between picks and drops added in. I would figure Extra miles at 10%. That puts you down to 0.45 per mile or less.
If a W2 type employee then it's O.K. for a new driver, not great. Would depend on how his shippers and receivers function and if the equipment is any good. Is he paying health insurance or you?
If a 1099 contractor (marginally illegal cause you are not providing your own tools, in this case the truck) that will net out to be less than a 40 cents per mile W2 employee makes. And you will still have to cover health insurance out of your pocket. -
That's good money for just starting out. I'd do it.
ExOTR Thanks this. -
