So I am in Dallas, TX

lately i have been looking for company sponsored schools, IE Stevens and Raider's express .

I was wondering for those who have done it, DOES IT MATTER or IS IT MORE COST EFFECTIVE to go by myself to get my learner's permit to the DPS before i even sign up with those schools?

I am trying to minimize costs so i am trying to do everything i can to be able to attend the school while being cost effective.

    thanks

If you had it before school started... it be one less headache to deal with. Not sure if it would save you any money

I would say the opposite myself. For various reasons. First is it won't be simpler, as the schooling is set up to handle it. It won't cost more as the state is who charges. If the school falls through, you may need to get a permit in another state, as the second choice school is based there. That could cause problems making you have to wait until one clears the system, so the other can overwrite it.

    LTPO Thanks this.

Call the school and ask. If you can afford it, get it before school though because you can be doing other classroom stuff or driving on the yard, instead of studying for the permit test. Either way is ok, just depends on which you're more comfortable with.
Google : "Free CDL Practice Tests Texas" and get started.

LTPO, I agree with "Chinatown," get your Permit, if possible, before going to school. Also make sure you do a side by side comparison of each schools training agenda and reputation in the industry. Look also at the location where you will attend (Example: training for Mountain driving or on the Flats-big difference), equipment (Automatic v. 10 Speed), types of trailers you will train on and finally what the contract requires of you after you obtain your CDL.

I think schools would prefer you get your permit now then that'll be one less thing you have to worry about. But call your school first to be on the safe side.

My uncle wanted to get his cdl when he saw how much fun I was having and money I was making. He decided against coming to Swift because he didn't want a contract and wanted home daily fake trucking job.

Also didn't get his permit before the government paid to send him to get his cdl.

Stayed home and went to cdl school a few hours a day. I warned him that he needed to choose a school where you stay in a hotel and fully focus on getting your cdl, with other people fully focused on getting their cdl. He didn't listen. He's also got no cdl. He failed the pretrip at DPS.

Moral of the story pick the place that is 100% immersed in getting your cdl, and go with the permit in hand, because it's already hard enough

Get your permit, even a if you sit through another class about it, you will be ahead.

yeah, when you show up at class with permit in hand, you can drink coffee and flirt with the receptionist while the other students are watching videos and going to DMV etc. good luck

I see this is an old thread. I see nothing wrong with doing this as long as you understand two caveats. 1. These permits are only valid for so long and 2 it's worthless if you happen to attend a school in another state.
