@bbechtel16 Can you hook up an ELD if the insurance companies price your paper logs out of business? That's a likely scenario. Paper logs are a liability anymore.

Yeah that was/is a concern of mine I expressed to my boss about our insurance carrier. He of course doesn't consider it a possibility. I should have talked to them myself about it but I didn't. We use Daily whom seems to insure a lot of PA outlaw companies so I have some confidence in them. I would be willing to pay a certain premium to maintain my independence/flexibility whatever you want to call it. The good news is this truck also gains me a sleeper and from what I'm being told might be in better shape than my current truck anyway. Worst case I would think upgrading the electronics to a newer CPL would make it compatible with BigRoad. If not there are other solutions that will retrofit even a mechanical. I would like to keep both but cash wise I need to sell it. I wish there was a reasonably affordable way for a single O/O to keep a spare truck that could be used while the other is in the shop for a day/week/month without paying for 2 plates, 2 2290s, and insurance? You can only drive 1 at a time!

I sold my trucking equipment and bought a small apartment complex in a college town. It is nice when your assets make money without much additional work on your part... Plus I'm no longer worried about how much Uber, Otto, or the FMCSA will change things 5-10 years from now. Nor do I risk jail time, the loss of my net worth, or even death if I get distracted for 2 seconds and have an accident.

I do miss the road sometimes, especially when replacing a soggy subfloor because Ms ArtHistory didn't know the shower curtain goes inside the tub, but on the whole it's been a good trade.

Sorry to hear you finally got rid of your equipment???? Hopefully you got close to what it was worth? Glad to see ya still hanging around. You are a great asset to this forum. I have some rentals too but I got to keep making money till I get some more debt paid down. About 10 years it will all be paid for so it will be a nice income stream to go with everything else.

I opened my MC reading on this thread while being a company driver for just 8 months. Got an idea what truck to buy, how much to charge, where to go and where not. Basically all the basics a newb needs to know. Without you sharing your experiences I would have made many more unneeded mistakes. Thanks for the read. Truly wish you a good luck in your new venture.

WTF, sir you can't just leave mid year to go play land lord.

I HAVE NOT FINISHED LEARNING FROM THIS THREAD AND I JUST BOUGHT A TRUCK.

But in all seriousness, why? Is it because of the risk?

I can understand the pressure and anxiety one must feel as an independent. I would assume a lot have that feeling that theyre on borrowed time. That that black swan is right around the corner. Couldn't a lot of your exposure have been managed by leasing onto a carrier though? Could you have not maybe explored the idea of buying another truck and hiring drivers?

Or was it more because of your disposition? You have always struck me as someone who prioritizes their free time and are more compatible with "passive" streams of income. The type of work you can plan extensively, focus on quality, at your own pace without having that feeling of high stakes.

Either way thank you for making this thread.

Saw one on FB in pre egr tucks just like your describing. I think it was in Alabama. was interested for a spare truck but im just to old to do a flat top again. Its better than the cabovers we use to drive but i need a MidRoof with my old body. I need to be able to stand up and get dressed and stretch my back.

A retried truck driver and a apartment full of coeds. What could possibly go wrong?
Good luck on your new adventure.
