What states?
I know theres something about being a 53ft load on a 48foot trailer is legal as long as it not divisible....? Something along those lines... i could be completely mistaken though. Wait for experience to come along.
But what states is the load going through?

im certain it is legal. Up to 4' off is ok on a 48'. Just wondering if I need red flag stuck to the back. I did it anyways.
Airborne and Shock Therapy Thank this. -
Most states give you 4' overhang to the rear of a 48' trailer. Put 1-2' of overhang on the nose and 3-4' of overhang on the tail and you can haul a 53' load (even a divisible one) anywhere 53' trailers are allowed. If you want all 5' of overhang on the rear (as in you lack clearance up front to turn), then you'd need flags & banners & possibly even permits.
I've never flagged anything up to 4'.Highway Sailor, IluvCATS, Blackshack46 and 1 other person Thank this. -
While I smile at your sarcasm - Ca is very liberal in it's policy of requiring pilots cars unlike most Midwest and eastern states - that like to start at 90'
I believe California allows like 40% overhang of the item over hanging -
Btw it goes WI to PA. I already made it to PA no red flag. The only reason I'm tripping is because I saw another 48' drive by me with same amount of rear overhang. He had 3 flags on it. I normally only use a 53'. Thx for the answers.

Liberal describes California very well....whoopNride, SAR, cke and 2 others Thank this.

Personally I run flags on the back of any overhang. Takes less than a minute to do and adds some visibility.
Last load I hauled had 3 ft off the back and about 5 off the front. No permits but I still had both flags and magnetic lights on the rear. Lots of bad weather so I felt the extra visibility was good. -
Some folks like to pretend they are hauling oversize just because the trailer isn't entirely under the load. I chuckle every time I see someone running flags & banners for nothing more than a foot or two off the rear...wondering if they actually sought a permit for it and what the reaction from the clerk processing that request a happened to be. Of course the state's going to take your money...but know that they're laughing at you the whole time, just like everybody who sees you running down the road pretending you're hauling an oversize load.Highway Sailor and Shock Therapy Thank this.
