I live right in the totality zone in Oregon. One guy said he expects power outages. My own bank is closing that day and news are telling people to fill up car week before and have money on hand.

I had the privilege of watching a total eclipse in January or February of 1979 at a rest area just south of Ellensburg, WA. It was amazing.

All traffic on I-84 came to a full stop and folks got out of their trucks and cars to watch. The lights came on in Ellensburg. We were about 20 miles from the edge of totality overlooking the Ellensburg valley, everything was covered in snow, so we saw the Mt. Stuart range in the partial eclipse zone.

If you are near that area of the partial eclipse you will see waves of shadow miles across zooming at hundreds of miles per hour. I forget what that's called, but I could have SWORN that I HEARD the waves as a really deep sounding pressure on my ears and body. I read an article that confirmed there is infrasound at the edge of a total eclipse.

The split second totality ended a pinpoint of sun lit up a rainbow that illuminated a quarter of the sky that faded quickly as the intensity of the sun emerged. Then someone in the rest area in a hippy van with huge speakers started blasting out Here Comes The Sun by the Beatles. Cheering, laughing, crying everywhere. I saw a woman on the freeway running around hugging complete strangers.

Yeah. I will be booking a load to totality.

This isn't our first. Certainly won't be our last. Supposedly every 40 years . But I was way older then 11 the last time. And the next one is in 7 years according to one of the news websites I read.

Best way to capture this [if you're fortunate enough to be directly under the umbra] is probably to set up a tripod and camera on 2-5 second interval and later build a time-lapse vid, or use video recorder at 1x or 2x speed and record in front of a bank or church or courthouse clock.

While it won't be terribly spectacular, it is a phenomenon that few will ever experience in their lifetime

Those people are on to something. The world is coming to an end. The blackout is a cover so we can't see the giant space ship that's going to take special people to another galaxy. I owe it to myself to finish off that 5th of Crown Royal and that doobie I have stashed in that fake thermos.

    Lepton1,

The big difference this time is it will be millennials stopping on the freeway taking selfies. They will also blame the eclipse on Trump somehow, since most of them are too stupid to know what is happening.

What a crock.... These things take time to plan, so it must be Bush's fault....

I just hope the chais isn't as bad as Y2K. The riots, the burning cities, the mass hysteria, cats & dogs living together, or was it a big nothing? It was one of those. The next 99 events will also be that way. If it's on TV it's not important.

Some people believe anything. I remember the big oil crisis when the Saudis were threatening to cut off our oil supplies. I delivered a truckload of cooking oil to a grocery store. When I got there people were waiting in line for it.The store owner had signs up everywhere saying something like "Due to the oil crisis with the Saudis, better buy now before we run out." Some of those people were obviously very poor, but were wasting money on cooking oil, buying those huge plastic bottles that were about 3 gallons each.

Looks like there wont be too many big cities affected by it, so that should keep the looting down to a minimum. Maybe in Kansas City or St. Louis they'll have a problem.

I wonder how the flat earth society explains this one away.
