I had a little automotive training like you when,I started,so like yourself,I knew what a tie rod end and a waterpump did.I actually watched a guy in school, place his hand on a serpentine belt and repeat the drill "securely fastened, not broken or rusty". A serpentine belt rusty? Come on...LOL

IDK, all the backing problems and questionable driving I've seen have been from the megas, particularly the one with gold trucks. I've seen a driver from the refrigerated Texas mega back straight into the side of a sleeper and take right off. I know a driver who got his hood ripped off after parking to go inside to get his fuel receipt, again hit and run. That's why I prefer to park at rest areas or better yet, those big truck-only parking areas. I really like my truck and don't want to have it damaged. When I do sleep at truck stops everytime something goes bump in the night I open the curtain and see if anyone backed into me.

They don't learn how to back up, they learn how to pass the test.

Everyone is always in a hurry.some of these docks are super tight for a sleeper truck I make them wait.
I'll get out and offer assistance if I see a driver having trouble.
I've had drivers offer me assistance also..some drivers take offense if you offer help.I couldn't care less if they get an attitude.
We're all out here doing the same job ,no good things come from damaged properly.

To my surprise I back way more than I ever thought I would and it's normally a blindside with cranes and forklifts and totes every where. Just a big enough hole to get the trailer in

Just passing by and Bean Jr. Thank this.

I kinda got left alone to my own devices when I was learning backing. That was a blessing to be honest. Let me experiment with setting up differently each time, trying different things etc. My instructors basically just went over the basics and then left me alone to practice them.

The ###### that didn't know how to park or back up should have been in the back row practicing how to back a truck up into a spot.
This clearly shows the driver was lazy and wanted the closest parking spot to the door of the truck stop and has no interest in the safe operation of a semi either in a parking lot or a highway that I have to share with it.
    And
I thought that was the International signal we were choking and not the signal for flashers

Honestly, its not drivers that have trouble backing that bothers me...... it's the ones that can't drive forward that scare the #### outta me.

That'll make me look like a rookie everyday of the week.

I usually line my piss jugs up as a drivers side guide. :p
Kidding, kidding... I don't live in a truck anymore.... but when I did!!!.....

Here is a funny story. I've had my license since I was 17, 35 years. I had to take the skills years when I transferred my license to Illinois. So I took a company 53' trailer and my 236" wheelbase truck to take it. I failed on the 45° backing because the overhang crossed the line. The tester asked how I could back up if I couldn't pass the test. I told her in the real world nobody cares if you cross the line, as long as you don't hit trailers, which of course are easier to see than lines on the ground. Then I asked her how is it that there are drivers you have passed who can't back up? She had no answer.
