I am sure I will be getting a lot of harsh comments about this one.. I been looking and shopping around for my first truck and came up with an International Prostar+, yes maxxforce engine, 2013 and 350k miles, price tag $27k out the door with 1 year warranty for power train and maintenance (egr, dpf, injectors, etc). aside for the many possible issues this truck may have, this is a 1 year or 2 year truck for me until i can get more money lined up for something else. All other brands, volvo, kw, petes, frighline, are about $50k on a 2012/2013 with 500-600k miles and no warranty... but for argument sake and if I had the $50-60k to spend, which one would be a good one for an o/o? (sleeper cab)

There is a reason for the price difference

Save a little longer so you can buy a truck that you can actually bring in revenue with... kinda helps if you want to see a black number at the bottom of the page rather than a red one

    Get the one that works.

Have you researched, yourself not other peoples opinions, trucks? I mean tirelessly researched used trucks? Have you identified the common defects in the different models and engines?

    Start there.

Then get the one that works.

I'll give you a tip. Penske is a very good place for used vehicle. They keep and do meticulous maintenance on their trucks. All the records are available on line and it costs nothing to look.

well i did ask and the egr and cooler where changed 2 months ago. it also has 1 year left manufacture warranty aside from the 3rd part warranty thru premium 2000+.... JL i wish i had the 75k to get that KW but i dont and finance it at 10%+ its just crazy, after 2 years i would be so upside down that it would make it that harder to get out of it... but I appreciate the input

What is the first rule of looking for a truck?

Create the specs that are for what you are going to be hauling.

    Second rule is what?

    DO your due diligence.

Warranties are meaningless unless you take in account what it doesn't cover and the downtime loses that a breakdown creates.

    #### dude 10% is rough! I know a guy that has a freightliner long hood that's for sale. It's an early 2000's truck and had an overhaul last fall. He's trying to sell it to me as a backup truck but it could be perfect for a guy starting out. I think he wants around 25k for it. Black with red fenders. If your interested just let me know and I'll somehow get you guys connected. It's older but seems well
    maintained an no emissions crap.

I would run away from the maxxforce. That is probably the worse engine ever made. International stopped making it. I think some people were trying to sue them. The dealers can't even fix the engine. You better hope the warranty covers parts and labor. You will be screwed on the down time.

The new international engine is an engine from Europe because international did such a bad job with the maxxforce. They can't afford another engine failure so they just got engine from Europe that been in production over their and I guess reliable with the new emissions since they have that over their before USA. I think it's that MAN truck engines but not sure.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a prostar with a maxxforce if you take it to a dealer they HAVE to diamond renew it for free which fixes the original issues it had.

My buddy bought one last year for 25k and has run reefer with it nonstop since when was it uhhh march 2016. If you pm me I can hook you two up if you got questions. The only problem it ever had was the turbo crapped out. But his truck payment was literally 1k a month.

You'll have so much spare cash to save to fix any issue with a truck payment so small it's a non factor.

Or you could goto lone mountain IEL wasatch whatever and get a brand new truck and spend 2500 or so a month like I and many others have.

I believe my buddy made the best choice he has WAY more money to save per week than I do.

Insurance, truck, bs fees for elogs etc Im -789bucks a week to work off before I even break even. His weekly is only -360. Big difference especially when you can pay the truck off in a year Vs 4.
