    What if the IRS audits you and ask for a copy of your logs for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016, in order to verify per diem write off, and you only have the last 6 mos of 2017?

    Because keeping them six months is the bare minimum. There's no legal mandate to permanently erase them on month six, day one. Every user agreement you've ever clicked on has something you don't like in it. Welcome to the tech age. The real question is, can any sort of enforment action be taken on logs older than six months? If not, don't worry about it. Personally, I don't mind. I like to procrastinate on tax stuff as long as possible and having a whole years worth of logs online (using KeepTruckin on my phone, no ELDs) is pretty handy to calculate per diem

    The point is there is no legal mandate to keep them beyond six months.
    So why wouldn't the customer be given the option of how long they would like to keep them beyond the six month mandate?
    As far as law enforcement taking action on older logs l believe it will be like the red light cameras.
    The narrative for red light cameras was "we are installing video so we can have information on traffic flow at intersections to be used for the better design of intersections"
    And then later... SURPRISE! we are also writing tickets from that information.
