It's time for the government to police these companies that are cheating drivers on government contracts.

 

I can't get anyone to tell me how to figure my hours and from past check stubs its impossible to figure out. Some are more than actual drive time and some less, Ive called about ones less and they make it up but only to actual drive time. Is there a way to find out what they are supposed to pay? Usually if they hide what they are paying theres a reason i know. This could actually be a really good job if not for that and long unpaid layovers

 

The hours are set for the trip. I don't complain about delays because 90% of the time I make the trip in less time that I'm paid paid for.
Don't think you can do anything about layovers. We have one run that they ask the driver to wait 3 hours. However we get paid for that time.
Now if you have a layover because you will run out of hours that's a diferant story.

 

no this is a 24 hour layover because no mail going out, and if its a set time for trip shouldnt it be consistantly the same?

 

We were given a list of the trips and what they pay.
If you get paid diferant hours for the same run ask your company how they figured out the time.
That 24 hour layover sucks. This should be a run for someone that lives in the area. This way you just take a day off.

Don't know who you work for but you should be getting paid for 24hr layover.

 

Each company sets their own numbers as to how many hours they pay for each run. I have been told my company takes the total miles driven, divides it by 56 or 57 miles per hour, then adds time for pre trip, post trip and fueling. It normally adds up to more hours then I actually work so I wont harp on the occasional short pay. Doesn't your pay stub show # of hours paid ?
Some runs pay directly off the # of miles on the truck based on 1 hours pay for 50 miles driven,, EX a 500 mile run pays 10 hours
Some runs pay the actual on duty and driving hours off the electronic log sheet
As far as the 24 hour layover, we get paid 8 hours once the layover hits 24 hours, 16 hours at 48 etc. Sometimes they don't volunteer the layover pay so you got to jump up and down on somebody's desk to get it

 

I've been hauling mail as a fill-in part-time driver for 10 years now. Usually work around 10-15 hours per week and I've always gotten the H+W pay.

Also, you are required to be paid for ALL HOURS you are dispatched under a USPS load. Doesn't matter that the run pays 9 hours and it took you 10...you are to be paid for 10 hours. I know this because I worked for a contractor that would only pay what the run paid. We reported them to the USPS and got backpay PLUS interest.

Lots of unscrupulous contractors out there taking advantage of drivers. Gotta watch em like a hawk and don't be afraid to go to the USPS if you're getting ripped off. The USPS will freeze all payments to the contractor if they're found guilty of short changing drivers.
