Like I said, that's not my bread and butter, but 200 miles of deadhead vs. $1000 in your pocket can be nice from time to time. I try to gross as much weekly as possible, since I'm doing a 50/50 split with the owner.

Unless my math is wrong...You telling us that your buddy was netting $42/trip after paying you & fueling the truck????
And was being paid 97cent per mile gross (assuming you had to run back to OH asap, therefore had to deadhead)

Here are my assumptions for my math:
716 miles, truck burns 143gals @ 5mpg, which costs $358 @ $2.50/gal

That's the best part about it. Since it's Government. The post Office paid for fuel as long as ur truck got 6 mpg, or better. All he had to worry about was regular maintenance. That's why he bought a 2015 Glider with a Detroit in it. If ur truck was doing lower than 6 mpg u had to make up the difference. There is good money in mail. If a company can start u out at 20-21 a hour and 5 dollars on the hour for retirement there making some good money.

No you don't need a trailer and it depends some is drop and hook. I was relaying with a guy when I was doing the Knoxville run. It all depends, but you do not need a trailer.

So your buddy was making $1.17 a mile plus fuel. As long as he got 6mpg the fuel was covered? So approximately $1.50 a mile all in with half those miles empty? You call that good money?Ruthless Thanks this.

To some people no, to me yes. My car is paid off, my house is paid off, etc... so to me yes 16,800 a month minus my upkeep would be great money to me!

How about a 2015 intl prostar w cummins isx 450hp. Dynos at 500+. 310K miles. 10 spd. Cummins rebuilt motor at 292k. New liners, pistons, rings. Gets 7.3 mpg w 44k of payload. Got a potato chip load now, getting 9.1.
Extended cummins warranty to 4/18. That rebuild cost me 0. -
Having to be rebuilt at less than 300k is why people are rightfully terrified of the ISX. Good luck with it.

Was burning oil. Cummins said rings were carboned up due to high rates of egr. I asked will it happen again. Reply was that Cummins redesigned liner piston clearances to prevent this problem from reoccurring.
