My husband and I have been class A drivers for 3 years now and we've been discussing obtaining our own authority within the next few months. We have been company drivers, so we need to start from the beginning. Managing the books for our business venture is not my concern, I'm only really nervous about obtaining loads. we're located in the central pa area, any advice on what load boards/brokers to use or either steer clear of? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Happy Motoring Ya'll!!!

I would advise you to look really hard a leasing on to a good company. (Not purchase a truck from a carrier and haul there freight) starting your own authority cost a fortune right now in insurance premiums. Finding freight for 1 truck is also very difficult with a new authority.

If you buy a truck and lease on to a good carrier with direct fright you will be much better served most of the time. Make sure you get insurance quotes before you do anything else!!!!

Find a carrier that has specialized team freight. They should pay a premium for your service and truck. Team freight is not given to a 1 truck show usually even under he best of circumstances.

www.OOIDA.com is a business website for the owner-operator and small fleet owner. I'd start there.

I'd love to have someone like you guys on my team. Can't beat a husband and wife team IMO.

Register for your authority and maybe let it age for 6 months to a year, then go out on your own? Mean time like Joe said, lease onto a good outfit. That may or may not be hard to find.

If you do sign on with someone during that year, then negotiate a really good deal! Team driving is going to be in hot hot, and I mean hot! demand once the ELD mandate hits. Ride the wave my friends.

Edit: PS.. if you are going to run team, you might aswell buy a brand new truck. Brokers and shippers hire teams for a reason, and breaking down isn't one of them.

A little off topic, but Old Dominion hires teams and love husband/wife teams. They can make $225K per year there as company drivers.

Realisticly what's stopping someone from registering an authority and allowing it to age? New entrant audit? Does it go dormant after a while?

You have to carry insurance for it to be active.
