The Navy was doing that plus, for prior service of any branch, they would subtract the years prior service from your age and if that brought you down to 42, you could enlist in the Navy.

The Navy enlisted thousands of Army vets that were RIF'd and some had lots of years in, but not enough to retire. All they had to do was stay in the Navy long enough to complete whatever time they needed for 20 years. Friend of mine was an Army Major in tanks and was RIF'd with something like 12 or 14 years. Navy brought him in as an E-6 and he still got Major retirement pay when he retired. He's a cool guy; always saying, "Can't believe I get hot meals and a decent bed to sleep in."

Well, sonny, I was commissioned at 37 with 19 years of service. I got my twenty year letter at OBC. If you were nuts, what the hell was I?

You grab the opportunity when it presents itself and you see it through. That's the only way to know if you have accomplished anything. It's also the best way to have something you can build your future upon. Quitting always has a negative net return regardless of how good it can feel at the moment.
