I can retire from my current job (IT work) in two years at the age of 60. I'm in good health, taking no meds, 6' 3" and under 200 lbs.

I haven't driven truck since 2007 so I know I will be starting as a trainee again. This time would prefer to learn open deck. However, would any training company hire me?

Has anyone on here started as a open deck newbie in their late 50's or older? If so, how did it work out? How about you guys currently doing flatbed, would you recommend starting at 60?

    Thanks

pattyj, Lepton1 and G13Tomcat Thank this.

I know a guy in his late 50's that started Prime in the flatbed division not too long ago; he's still kicking and loving it.
Another guy, older than you actually, started with Western Express a few years ago, and switched to Knight / Sapa division, and is turning and burning the miles and money.
No reason you can't do it if that's what you desire.

I'm 54, been driving for almost 20 years myself, and I pull asphalt tanks in season, and flats in the winter.

Best wishes to ya, man! If you want it, so be it.

ps: If you have an 'aversion' to boxes (as do I,) you could always look into starting out pulling tanks, ya know!

ps: I got RIF'd from IT and went 'back' to trucking myself, in 2003. You're lucky to have even been able to hold ON to it this long~! ;)

I moved over to flatbed at 46 and have had no issues whatsoever working drivers 20 years younger than me right into the ground. If you're in good health and in reasonable physical condition, you should have no.problem whatsoever.

By the way, @G13Tomcat is a hell of a nice guy and as helpful as they come...but tanker yankers are a weird bunch that bear watching closely....

You know I like ya Tom...just giving you a little grief...lol.

I'm 61 and started flatbed two and a half years ago. I was stiff and sore the first week, but soon got into the swing of things.

The flatbed forum was definitely a help getting comfortable with load securement. I learn new tricks every day.

I love this job. I may consider retiring in another twenty years. But not yet.
