My wife and I are thinking about starting a little freelance transport business where I would use my 2013 Ford F350 to haul 3 cars on my goose neck trailer at a time to deliver. I know there are restrictions to weights for a CDL, but would it be compliant for me to do this without a CDL?
Thanks for your help

Most likely you will not need a cdl. You only need a cdl b if the gvwr (truck and trailer) is 26,001 or more. A class a is needed if the trailer is 10,001 or more. Most likely you are below the 26k mark.
You will need a dot number, medical card, and all other requirements as you are a cmv. Anything over 10,001 is regulated. Doesn't matter if it's a semi or a pickup hauling cars. -
You will be hauling freight (cars) for $$$. You'll need a CDL.

3 cars average 9000 lbs with a trailer that weights at least 3000, yes you will need a cdl.

9000 for a car????

If the trailer is over 10K lb, yes. With a couple of 6K lb pickups and a car on, your payload will be close to 15K, and the trailer will be at least 6K. Even with a goose neck, you'll be over 10K some of the time.

Since there is so much wrong information on this thread....
Here is the link to the Michigan CDL manual. On pg 5 it specifies who needs a CDL.
https://www.michigan.gov/documents/cdlmanul_16090_7.pdf
Just because one makes money off driving does not a CDL require. Just because on delivers products does not a CDL require. It's all about the combined vehicle weight, if it's a bud, or if it hauls placarded amounts of hazmat. Nothing else.
Since the op is not driving a bus, or hauling hazmat (reportable quantities), all that is left is the weight issue. I've already answered that.
Now there are some states (Michigan, maybe others) that require a chauffeurs license if one makes money driving, but that is just a money grab. Go to SOS (or DMV) and add that for a fee. No testing or anything like that required.Landincoldfire Thanks this. -
