Right now i am leased on with a company pulling containers out of the port in Savannah. Was thinking about getting my own authority. Just wanted to get some ideas of how it works in the container world. is pay better? is it worth it? Any information will be appreciated.

Domestic or import containers? Yes,There is a difference in how you set up.

Next- Most steamship lines want volume cartage companies- 10 trucks minimum.

If your serious about it- You must start out by contacting and registering with the UIIA
And every port or Rail Hub you are to be registered with an Interchange agreement ,SCAC code and asking for a DUNS Number on File.

You are too insure ,I Believe 2 million on Hub Agreements-With interchange on File with INS.

Next,Soliciting your company to the Steamship Lines (Example-Evergreen America-Maersk,Mitsui etc)
Overseas forwarders etc- Then once you contract business- You are to provide X amount of Power to them- If Not,Your History in a Flash.

Its Very competitive and Everybody wants to be a cartage company in intermodal it seems.

Domestic moves (the 53' footers you see) Already have the logistical side in place to carry through a customers request for rail movement- If you want to move those containers- You have to contact folks like- Hub City- CHRobinson- etc,

    Good Luck in your endeavors-

Get your own authority and find an established company that will use you as a true O/O. Company I work for has 3, we are simply a broker to them, they are paid 90% of what the company charges for the load. They all have their own cargo insurance, authority, etc., etc., etc. Other than acting as a broker, the company also lets them use our SCAC code at the ramps and depots.

I'm in Washington state, have my Authority, 2012 Cascadia, 2007-12 point 4 axle super chassis, pro-rated and have been a contract carrier with a large, reputable intermodal company based in Portland, OR for 1-1/2 years. Year-to-date I am at $176,000 gross ($26,000 ahead of last year). Fuel thus far is $6500, insurance is $10,400 (I use their SCAC), chassis expenses are $7400 and truck is $16,000 (incl. both modules, clutch, PM's and.....stuff). I might spend 1-2 nights a week mainly because once I get to my rented ($200 mo.) parking spot I have to drive another 1.5 hours to get home and I may be tired, but I am home EVERY weekend. With ELD's coming into play I may have to start leaving some Sunday afternoons in order to conserve my HOS. Money is to be made in any line of work IF you have some giddy-up about ya. I have always jumped in with both feet because I know my worth and refuse to let someone else dictate my value to myself and my family.

I wish you luck in whatever you decide but I will tell you this, happiness is not found in dollars. I was a homebuilder for 31 years and had lots of dollars, a 48 foot boat, 9 maxed-out credit cards and a $900,000 home until 2008. We are happier now than I have been in many years. THAT is what important.

What percentage do you make having your own Authority? I do not have own authority, making 71%, and at 116000 ytd.
Interested in with whom your contracting with or type of entity they are as well. I'm in the Ohio region so may not be available but at least some leads etc.
Thinking of obtaining authority or going into business myself.
    Thanks for any additional info.

Depends- By looking at your numbers, 116k so far is GREAT if your working within 25-30 miles from Cleveland or Cincinnati rail hub.....We call them Cross-towns or Shags.

If your running 1800 miles a week going on 150-200 mile trips... Then NO

Problem with you is, You wont get any Business without a minimum of 10 trucks (import/ export anyway)

Domestic drayage like Hub City or CH Rob- Im not sure what their minimums are

Just curious, but I see a company called Draynow advertising for O/O w/ own authority. I read their ad and website and they are like a load board and they cover the interchange ins. At least in the Chicago market they are claiming $4,000+ week guaranteed.

    Mooseontheloose Thanks this.
