This is likely to be lengthy, so please forgive in advance?

I have been driving since 1991. I drove wild and crazy for a while, then had to match my logs to the Qualcomm 100%, zero variance for 10 years or so. I don't have any problems with driving legal, but I do have some worries about the paperless logs...

Ok, let's say I arrive at International Paper at noon, and I go inside and I'm told that my load won't be ready until tonight. I can drop my empty here, and then go over to the bobtail lot and hang out til they assign me a new empty, and I may be asked to spot it, and then wait til it's loaded. The scales are waaaaay around in the back of the mill where they take in bark and chips.

Ok, my understanding of the paperless logs is that, if you arrive somewhere and go off duty, and you move the truck, it will automatically put you back on the driving line. If you are "in the sleeper" and something forces you to move your truck, you'll violate your sleeper time and jump back to the driving line. If you are called to grab an empty and spot it and hang out for your load, you'll violate your sleeper time, AND your 14 hour period will start, AUTOMATICALLY, and there's nothing you can do about it...

Am I on the right track here? Does it really work like that? Does the computer sense movement and force you to violate yourself, doing minor little things that truckers have been forced to do since trucks were first invented?

I'm not trying to be an ### or anything...I really want to have an idea what I'm up against...

One last question. If I have a 1 truck fleet, with my own authority, do I still have to do paperless logging?

    That orta get us started....

Most ELDs have a minimum MPH and/or distance before they register. I wouldn't worry about it. Instead, I'd be more concerned for they'll push for next.

Those who think using this little loophole will work for long are sadly mistaken. Once "they" get this mandate through, next they'll be pushing driver facing camera laws in! They'll say it's the only way to catch "cheaters" who are putting everyone at risk.

    Watch.

i load and unload at a lot of large refineries, and other types of plants.

when i say large, i mean you could easily clock 5+ miles just by driving around there and never take the same road twice, or leave the property. i get around the automatic status change by doing "off duty driving/personal conveyance".

that way if it registers me moving, then i wont loose my break.

sometimes i get lucky and can go in and come back out without it registering, but it's still a better practice to just go off duty driving just in case it does, you wont loose your break.

Glad I don't have to deal with all that in my pre-2000 girl...

I can roll my truck while in sleeper/off-duty status without moving to the driving line. For the truck to automatically put me on the driving line I need to be a. moving faster than 30 mph and b. have gone more than 2 hub miles from the time my brakes were pulled.

Funny enough, if the plant is truly large, I can stop and reset my brakes (pull and press) and continue on and go basically as far as I'd like as long as I don't go above 30 mph.

Never been on paper logs. Never truly care to be.

Thanks Jimmy...saved me 3 minutes! *grin*

Seriously, I went thru the paperless logging class at Western Express and it seemed like a piece of cake. I was really looking forward to it. But when I got to the paper mill, I went thru the exact scenario that I described, and it kept jumping to the driving line on me.

At the time, best I remember (it was in 2011) they didn't offer an option of "off duty / personal conveyance / beer run"...

I may have made a bad choice, but I basically told them they could keep their new truck. I didn't mind logging legal, matching to the satellite, but #### a system that won't let me move my truck to a shady spot or get out of somebody's way or move closer to the restaurant!!!!
One of the exemptions is if I'm driving a truck manufactured before 2000...

I don't think California would be overly pleased with me, because I always wanted to get an old Pete 359 and restore it with a mechanical Cat...but I can drive a lotta miles without crossing into California...

I liked paper logs for the "wiggle room"....I could swing into the Pilot, grab a coffee, drain the snake and buy a cigar and be back rolling in less than 10 minutes. I'd write it down as 15, and the Qualcomm would update my position, and I'd gain 5 minutes / 5 miles that would do me well later on, when I ran into slow traffic or snow covering the lines in the road, etc...

Currently the ELD can be set for whatever minimum speed the company wants before it triggers a move to line 3. UPON mandate it will be set to trigger to line 3 - up to 5 mph. The company can set for whatever they want from 0 - 5 mph, BUT it must trigger no greater than 5 mph.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - ELD Rule

When will an electronic logging device (ELD) automatically start to record a driving mode or status?
    PreviousNext

An ELD must automatically switch to driving mode once the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) is moving up to a set speed threshold of five miles per hour. As a result, the in-motion state must not be configured greater than five miles per hour. The vehicle will be considered stopped once its speed falls to zero miles per hour and stays at zero miles per hour for three consecutive seconds

When will an electronic logging device (ELD) automatically change the duty status from driving to the default duty status of on-duty not driving?
    PreviousNext

When the duty status is set to driving, and the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) has not been in motion for five consecutive minutes, the ELD must prompt the driver to confirm a continued driving status or enter the proper duty status. If the driver does not respond to the ELD prompt within one minute, the ELD must automatically switch the duty status to on-duty not driving.

I agree. And knowing what's been posted above is coming soon, I'm not sure how much wiggle room I'll have left once that mandate goes into affect.

With that being said, I can currently do anything I need on the ELD.
