Greetings to all the hard working truckers out there. I appreciate you hard work... I have a question that someone might be able to solve... I have driven for CR England back in 08 for a few month.. In 2010 I purchased my own truck and drover OR hauling mail all over the south and east coast. for over a year.. I then worked for a local oilfield company for 3 years I drove Belly dumps, Aluminium end dumps, Round bottoms... after that I drove about 3 months doing frac sand in west Texas... I had to stop driving for a while because I was getting married to a Philippine lady I met 4 years prior and I really needed to be home for her until we went through all the immigration stuff. I worked for myself in construction now.. last time I drove was DEC of 2014 I roughly have about 4 years experience on many different types of trailers... I want to show my wife the USA so I'm thinking about buying a truck cash and leasing on to one of the flat bed companies... but as you know the insurance companies want RECENT experience... I don't understand how the Trucking companies are willing to hire a truck driving school grad who most likely was lucky to spend about 10 hours behind the wheel just to get his CDL and would not hire someone with actual experience.. Its as if all your experience has no value but a trucking school grad has more value then you do ,,, even though they never had any experience at all. I know its the Insurance companies that are running the show... but My question is I'm wanting to run my own truck.. not be a company driver.. so I applied at a few companies as a Owner Op but they want 1 year OTR within the last 3 years.. anyone know how I can get around that? I'm not going to go back to a CDL school that is only good enough to get a CDL Why would I need a refresher course if I buy my own truck and can drive it ... Question do you think I can run under my own authority with no issues or does anyone know of a company that only wants experience and not recent.. thanks sorry for the long post Stay Safe!

Some companies want experience within last 3 years but others say within 5 years. Your 2014 would be good with them. Two I know of are dart and jbhunt. Probably others.
It seems like the ones that want it within 3 years are the same ones that want to send you out with a "trainer" for peanuts for 8 weeks...like Crete. I've been doing my homework cuz I am in the same boat.

Thanks for your response I will never work as a company driver again I like my freedom and I want to take my wife and do my own thing. I have always been self-employed most my life and I like it that way. I actually have a good handyman business going I could stay in it. but I want to get back in Driving again I love the open road.

BT Express Global Services; check if they'll let you haul their freight with your own truck. They're located in Weatherford, Oklahoma. They get their loads off load boards.

Sir, You are a Company now. Not a Company Driver.

I think your paperwork related to the loads and work you have done will be more than sufficient.

Hang in there, someone will put your tractor to use soon enough. Don't you worry about that. I would.

You are operating in a totally different part of the industry than just a basic company "DRIVAH..." or worse a newly minted school graduate with the ten hours experience you speak of. You are literally a company. YOU get to decide who to hire, no one else.

If another company wants to contract and do business with you and your truck or trucks plural... Im pretty sure someone will find a way to make it work.

Consider my own situation, if I was implanted with enough parts worth 6 million dollars /sarcasm... and got DOT legal again to drive, I could not hire on as a basic company drivah with more than 30 years under my belt. Half the companies I ran for no longer exist and there is nothing left in the records to check that far back. It's silly. But it is what it is. I don't have a problem with it.

As long you continue to operate as a COMPANY rather than trying to act like a company "Drivah..." you will be ok. America is indeed the land of the free, for those who have the bawls to get into business and make it happen. Someday they prosper and hire people.

You can drive a truck locally and still not get an otr job because i haven't done otr in the last 3 years.

It's not just the peanut companies. I think the actual owner operator companies want experience also. I know JCT AND DSV did. I"m not sure about landstar and mercer and admiral merchants.

This was 8 years ago. I have no idea on the requirements for today. I have no desire to ever go OTR again. If i was to buy a truck. I'll look at the local companies instead.

Thanks for the reply... Yes I worked for a local company hauling aggregate for 3 years as company driver from 2011 to 2014... I live in Texas so its a big state if I want to drive local. I'm sure I can find someone to hire me and my truck even without recent experience.. I'm not against the trucking school grads who are trying out a new career.. what bothers me is while the insurance companies allow them the privilege to be hire with only a few hours of driving time, it makes no sense not to help the ones who have the experience regardless of when it was. its so moronic no common sense. Trucking schools only help you get you CDL all these refresher courses are nonsense. Its a racket. So many people out of work and need jobs they have experience and it cannot be utilized. because of the insurance companies.

As an owner-operator, you're a small business owner.
Lot of difference in insuring a small business and a single driver for a mega trucking company.
