Maybe a stupid question but a serious one at that. I'm picking up a 12' 2" load. When I measure do I include my chain and securement plate in the measurement? Or is it just the load itself?
Over width load

Just the load itself. But I always add a few inches to be safe.

Anything that adds to the width of the load should be measured. You can always add a couple inches width on your permit if needed as long as it doesn't put you into extra requirements (such as pilot cars for example).LWT104 and kaschnabel20 Thank this.

If a Mod would move this to the heavy haul sub-forum you might get more answers.
Crude Truckin', Klleetrucking and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
Legaly, you don't have to add securement to width. Chains, hooks. Depending on the states your going to run in, being over 12 ft. May require pilot car or cars.SAR, Crude Truckin', Truckermania and 1 other person Thank this.

I have to have an escort over 12' in CA anyway, so it doesn't really matter, but I want an accurate measurement for myself.
-
Very true but I have had times when every little width was measured and ended up having to get a new permit and get rerouted. Arizona, for example, once managed to turn a 12' width load into a 13 1/2' width load.Crude Truckin' and TripleSix Thank this.

It does matter. Never say that it doesn't when someone tries to help you. @superhauler told you correct. Just because the state requires one thing doesn't mean that you got it down pat. You may be required to get local permits if your destination is down some county road or city street. 12'2 would require a police escort besides the civilian in certain metro areas.Last edited: Oct 14, 2017
