Personally, I couldn't care less about ELD's: the real problem IMHO is the inherent inflexibility of the HOS rules. They were obviously written by a bunch of suits with no ##### idea of what it takes to get that load to Wal-Mart on time so wifey can pig out on her bon-bons while watching her soap operas. If the HOS rules were written with reality in mind then it wouldn't matter whether we were logging on a computer or using a hammer and chisel on a stone tablet.

As it stands now, our ability to do our jobs is being constrained by legislators whose idea of trucking come from watching too many "Convoy" or "BJ and the Bear" re-runs.

Again, this is not about Eld vs Paper. There are bazillions threads about that already.

By the end of next year most of these ELD companies will merge and or be bought out. Why do you think they are fighting so hard for your CC number now? I'm sure the cost will go up significantly once the dust settles from that as well.

Definitely about the money. Same as the sleep apnea, that had one hell of a paper trail. Nothing to do with safety, just the almighty dollar. And, hopefully like you stated we get an extension and than quash it. Let those guys take the money and run, just leave me alone.

It is, because you all act like it is the ATA, the government or what ever, there isn't a conspiracy, there is a lack of people willing to move forward with technology.

The same thing with this idea of those making the eld are making money, this isn't true.

    Why?

Because of the truth that we brought this crap on ourselves because we are a lazy industry.

Sure we will work hard, but when it comes to involving ourselves with important things, we refuse to do a thing.

I agree with tech who posted about the HOS, it really is, we could live with the 1962 version of HOS, it would actually allow us to be a bit more flexible and not so robotic under ELD.

I don't really understand your post , is it our fault because we're ludites , or we are not politically active , or what .

    Both.

I have drivers who think that a computer is evil and they refuse to use one in the truck, even to make money.

When I was on the road, it seemed to be those who were "old school" were losing money while those who embraced the technology did well.

I was an LS BCO so I would take loads that went every where, I used their tools to find what was going on and who was doing the work to get more work or to get out of areas in order to make more money. most BCOs I met didn't even consider using those tools.

ELDs are just one more thing that moves us forward. It is those who can't see the advantage to them that seem to be the ones holding us back, wanting to return to paper and having the "freedom" to cheat on their logs.

But seeing all the trucks I have, have elds, I know what my drivers are doing and how much time they have. This helps a lot when one of these idiot dispatchers drags me into a situation where they are trying to get a driver to do something that won't or can't do, I have ELD info to slam the dispatcher and her supervisor for even telling the driver they have time when they don't. Like I said I back my drivers first and then deal with it if they are wrong - 99% of the time are right.

As for the politically active, some are, some are not. Most are partisan which they need to get over and stop thinking in terms of a party or movement. Overall we are a heavily fractured industry, may be the worst one in the world. This is because of natural isolation and our attitude of "independence" from that myth that was created in the 70's. If we would get 15% of the people in this industry to approach it as a profession in both form and function and present one or two issues to those who are governing our regulators, I think things would change but I wouldn't count on it.

Would I like to see issues like ELD/HOS or CARB be fixed?

Yep but to me ELD is second to HOS (I want to return to the 1962 version of the regulations without any catches) but then CARB is very important for us, our right as citizens to enter states without special requirements to access the markets is extremely important to us and our way of making a living. The entire reason for the interstate commerce clause in the constitution is to prevent things like CARB dictating to those from other states and really it has already been addressed in different courts long before CARB existed that one state can not prevent access to another - it is also the foundation for the US DOT and FMCSA.

I agree with most of what you say and I'm not going to nit pick parts , I am also a LS bco and see drivers that won't work the load board , some just run for an agent or 2 , very limiting , but mostly I wonder why carb hasn't been challenged under icc or equal protection , it sets a bad president letting it go on
