Any tips for learning to shift without clutch

Releasing the clutch does not "take the load off the gears", it disconnects the engine from the transmission; if you are using it to "take the load off the gears" then you are shifting entirely wrong with or without clutch use.

The "load" is removed from the drive train by matching engine speed to road speed for the gear that is chosen, that is done with the throttle not the clutch; if you are using the clutch to "release the load from gears" you are destroying your clutch.

 

That's backward thinking. What;s hard on the clutch is tromping on it in high gear especially if you have 'tuned' the truck.

 

"tromping on it in high gear" does no harm to a clutch.

 

If it goes BANG!!! because you missed the RPM window and now the mainshaft is going too slow but you forced it in anyway... that breaks teeth.

If it goes Zzzzzzzzzzzzz, grrrrrrrrrrrr, clunk as you hold the shifter, forcing the clutch dog against the gear, waiting for the mainshaft to slow down, that rounds the teeth on the clutch dog and eventually causes it not to stay in gear.

If it goes in effortlessly because you just listen to the sound of the motor and you know exactly when it’s at the right speed... no damage occurred.

 

And you are thinking of a clutch backwards. It's the connection between the transmission and the motor.
Releasing the clutch to shift does no harm to the clutch and your driveline will thank you;

Clutches are for getting moving, forward or reverse. Not for changing gears. Once in a blue in a panic situation i may use it becuse i have to stop or slow to quickly to downshift, but only to break out of gear, then i float back into proper gear for speed and continue on.

 

You don't USE the clutch to change gears and the purpose of double clutching is to match the trans and engine and control the shock load.

 

There is zero shock load when i float. Soooo?

 

And at some point in time you will be wondering why it jumps out of gear sometimes.
