(I have to admit that I enjoy listening to truckers complain. Like I said, you're very articulate... very descriptive... and combined with your sometimes unique vocabulary, it makes for good reading.) -

This thread is full of good stuff. My hats off to ya'll men and women otr that are married and have kids. I've just started driving recently and I would have to compare it to the military serving overseas but not entirely. Afterall I get paid to sit on my butt pretty much all day long. I have nice cold ac blowing on my face or warm heat on my feet to keep me comfortable. I rock out with some tunes, catch some news or sports, and talk on the phone all day at work. I get to smoke and drink my coffee w/o anybody bothering me all day, except the people who like to blind me every hour with there high beams. The sound of a monster turbo diesel engine is music to my ears. I'm getting to see places and cultures many will not, and getting paid to do it. When I'm tired I take 2 steps and call it a night. When I'm hungry I reach over and get some munchies. I don't have to clean up much because I don't have much. I haven't been home in 2.5 months and can't wait to get back for T'giving. I'm gonna eat good, see my family, my dogs, my friends, party like its 1999, then come back to the only other place I'd like to be. I only wish I would have started driving sooner.

Has the life style of some drivers changed since Deregulation? We had more off-duty time away from home, and the hotel bills were paid by the employer. For some drivers, it was not a job, but a way to get from one city to another where all the action was. Some drivers had a second family. They kept a car at an away-from-home terminal. Some of their wives knew about it and tolerated it. Other drivers always chose loads to a particular city where they had a steady "midnight romance, low rent rendezvous". I teamed with one driver who could name the street in almost any city where a house of ill repute was located. Of course, any taxi driver can give you that information.
For some drivers, alcohol was part of the life style. Some carried a bottle in the truck. Some set speed records racing side by side trying to get to Detroit before last call at the tavern near the terminal. I remember a driver who would lay over in St. Louis all week by passing the loads offered to him. The company was paying the hotel bill, and the hotel had a bar. Then, on Friday afternoon he would choose a load for Grand Rapids and home. On Monday, it was back to St. Louis. His fleet owner asked him why he was always on the bottom of the earnings list. His reply: "Somebody has to be on the bottom." -
