See, all of the above is EXACTLY what concerns me, no one seems to know much if anything in regards to PC and OD time. And Line 5? We used that in the oilfield, and it was a PIA to figure out, and I have been logging on paper for nearly 30 years. One person would say this is acceptable and another would say no, do it like this. I am hearing the same here, no one seems to know, even you guys currently on the ELDs.

I'll just keep doing what I am doing, as it sounds like this is not a DOT issue, this is the carrier's back office issue to figure out and fudge. Funny eh? And I'm the cowboy? LOL! What is the difference if I fudge on my logs, or the back office does it for me? And trust me, plenty of outfits do that. One I worked for did continually up in the oilfield. When the accident rate went up, and then we had a fatality, along with going through a few of those back office guys, they just yanked PeopleNet right out of the trucks and gave us time cards.

I see a real mess coming down the road... ;-)

On the "new" systems (AOBRD's) you CANNOT alter drive time, it is what it is, so any back room fudging, at least when it comes to drive time will be short lived, the other issue with PC, really makes NO difference whether you are on ELD's OR Paper Logs, it's a vague interpretation at best that a lot of people don't understand because of the way it is written,,,,NOT because of the way it is recorded.

Some people really struggle with technology. sometime i have trouble understanding why they can't understand how to use a device then I remember I grew up using and working on computers so it's second nature to me for some it's a foreign concept.

Mark and others have it right in terms of PC and OD time. You are on "your own time" and released from any official company duty. You are unladen. You can drive in line 1. They (FMCSA) have not put a mileage limit on it yet. They DO use a "short distances" vague term though. Folks are right about that gray area. The company "ELD Admin" can set a PC miles limit though if they want to.

If you are dispatched from home to get a load directly - you are in Line 3. If the company is smart and the terminal is "in the same direction" as the load pickup, then they will have you "come into the terminal and check in to get your load." That way you can start the day going to the terminal in PC, line 1 - till you get to the terminal.

The technology does not bother me, I have played with plenty of stuff, including tuning my own ECM on the truck. But, these ELDs are another subject. First, I have no clue what I am getting. Second, the trucks that have them are seeing a real hit in NET income on our company driver side. We run short haul, so loads that we would normally take that might just hit that clock wall, are passed up and the driver left sitting not making a dime. Now it is err on the side of caution instead of taking the load. Our hope is is that rates will go up, but I have been in this racket to long and highly doubt any spike in rates will be long lived.

The one that works, and is relatively inexpensive. I'm 52, been out here near 30 years... ;-)
