    Let me ask a stupid question. It's been bugging me 30 years now... If a engine wont accept ignition and increase in rpm which is already at within 500 to 700 of max red line rpm at speed, that means the stock ignition system is no longer adequate correct? I'll have to install a MSD system that has bigger volts and possibly solid state advancement rather than the old points advance and retard right?

    The other side of the engine wont increase RPM at or near Top end red line tells me the Holley double pump CFM capacity is maxed out on a highriser and I need to both increase fuel flow and increase the CFM capacity with a larger holley....

    @Gunner75

    I'm getting dizzy reading these replies. You'd think the apocalypse is coming in December.

    I understand that alot of Owner ops and small businesses are concerned because of the financial costs--that makes sense. But half the people complaining about elogs seem like they're just scared of computers! Come on people, get with the times. You're making us all look like morons who don't know how to operate a computer less complicated than a smartphone. I've seen calculators more complicated than these things.

    You want to run an engine that hard consistently, I'd do a full rebuild. MSD ignition, high rise intake manifold, forged internals, and either higher compression heads OR low compression heads and boost (I prefer supercharged over turbo, no lag), smooth headers and bigger exhaust (duals, naturally), bigger and better carb, and a higher flow air intake system.

    The entire engine, from air intake to tailpipe, works together. The higher rpms come from a bigger explosion in the combust cycle, so you need to pack more air and fuel into the cylinder (more atomized the mix, the better), a bigger spark to burn everything cleaner and hotter (faster expansion), and get the burned gases out of the cylinder faster on the exhaust stroke. Bigger valves in the head are critical (or more valves, depending on engine, the newer engines will take as many as 4 valves per cylinder), as is the bigger intake and exhaust.

    This is why building fast engines is time consuming and expensive! I never had a drug problem growing up cause I couldn't afford it! Always needed parts for my latest "go fast" V8!

    Kids today don't need to be hanging out on a street corner. They need a good garage, an old clunker car, and a cranky old mechanic to play with! (And a good fund for speeding tickets set aside)

    Raise racers, not ravers!

    Supercharger will take a little doing and the high compression internals will need to do a little bit of doing as well.

    Agreed on all your points.

    I did not realize the extent of the joyful working on the engine in them days long before we had a internet.

    They were actually. But it manifested itself in a sort of floating rpm that high up on the tach. When you are in that position it's not easy to consider the finer points at the speeds we were at...
