i know that primarily my driving experience has been in class B dump trucks, i know that's of limited benefit. i have a couple of questions
    1. these companies would accept someone with only 1 year of OTR but they wouldnt accept someone with 20 years of dump truck and train them a little with a trailer? that 20 year dump truck veteran is going to be a better driver then someone who has only had a CDL for 1 year.
    2. why require 1 or 2 years of OTR to be qualified for the job. what if the person who wishes to apply for the job has several years of local tractor trailer hauling milk or hauling stone with a flowboy. what difference does it make? tractor trailer is tractor trailer as far as im concerned.

i know doing dump truck seasonally is not really going to land me year round work in WNY which is why i am considering other options. if i went to work a bottom feeder milk hauler (couple around here) and did it for a year or two (tractor trailer) would one of these companies asking for one or two years of OTR accept that as experience? would it benefit me to work for one of these shady outfits for a couple of years in order to get class A experience?

Yes. The key is tractor trailer.
You might try one that is at the top. Prime has a terminal in Pennsylvania. In fact, if you want tanker with them. That is the only place you go.

Any tanker will get you somewhere. Tanker is a good job. It is a step above. No matter what you're hauling in that tanker. Might surprise you. You might end up wanting to stay there.

EDIT: Only things you will lack in tanker. Please anyone, correct me if I am wrong. ...
You won't be moving tandems and fifth wheels like you do in reefer or dry van. Correcting for weight. ??? Don't think so. ???
You won't be able to get right into heavy haul. Like a flatbed would be able to do with experience.
But it is it's own special above the others group.

Yes, that will work. Most companies will hire you and give you a "quick & dirty" refresher course with one of their experienced drivers.

somethings got to be better then what im doing now. i actually enjoy the dump truck work until it ends, if i lived in a different climate i would stay in a dump truck...... unfortunately this is WNY. there were days doing dump truck on a paving job i actually had fun at work. but seasonal is seasonal.

problem with walton milk hauling you just wont really make much money there and they will work the dog out of you..... but they tend to give people such as myself a shot.

$150 per day and they can work you 12-14 hours per day.

Either way. If I were you. I'd be working on that Class A right now. Get better qualified. Get the experience. Then...
You do know. There is a section on those Government Grants for CDL school. It states that you're laid off or lack of work. That gives you the grant. That's how I qualified.
I just heard the magic words from unemployment today: "you will not be required to do job checks while in school." Yes!

I admit. That milk job doesn't sound swift. You should be able to find better than that.
EDIT AGAIN: Face the fact. You get class A. Get one year experience right after. Many consider that one year as part of getting the A. If you don't have the one year. You don't have an A, as far as they're concerned. Then you can go do whatever you want. You'll have A established.

i already have a CDL A, but i dont want OTR for family reasons. allot of doors are shut since i dont have much tractor trailer experience, that's why i was thinking that milk hauler. they pretty much have to take just about anyone.

a CDL-A is worthless just about without the right experience at this point i might as well only have a class B
