The highest paid drivers at Schneider are those "jetset" drivers that fly into markets where Schneider determines are markets in need. Seems like a lot of those temporary assignments are dollar store accounts where there is a lot of turnover. And the longer the drivers stay out the higher the weekly guarantee. Seeing some of the ads they're paying jetset driver up to 1700 a week for around 4+ weeks out. Schneider will pay drivers that are flexible apparently

True, city guys do considerably better than linehaul guys.
And it is possible that Schneider LTL might be just as well paid as even the Union jobs. No hourly pay but the mileage, load pays, and stop pays do add up. True, no pension. If you want one, as well as medical insurance, then you will have to contribute out of your own pocket. That being said, the actual income appears to be considerably better when everything adds up.
And although I have always been a Union guy (I believe that they are the only barrier between the workers and total exploitation by the big, mega profit companies), I am seeing the end of an era; and sadly so. Not only are the Union companies beginning to distance themselves from signatory and less binding contracts with the unions, perhaps even more sinister is that the actual union representatives themselves are not doing the jobs that they were elected to do. Complacency, arrogance, and apathy are rampant amongst Union officials.

    And the fish rots from the head down;

The Union members are doing nothing needed on the scale necessary to remedy the problem that effects their very existence, up to and including legally removing all their non-performing officers and replacing them as their Union rights allow them to.
Just the fact that not only does the problem continue, but actually grows worse shows that the throes of death are not far away.

Personally, and as life in this country seems to continually grow more difficult for basic survival ( happiness is never even mentioned any more; notice that?), the times are a changin' and the rich are getting richer while the rest of us fight for scraps and ideals that are being steamrolled by corporate greed. I dare say the battle is nearly over and all of us ( myself included) have let this country fall from a place of grandeur into a virtual banana republic.
Everybody is so quick to fight each other for the slightest infraction while the guys at the top look at us like the fools that we really are and run off with all the dough. And they actually convince us that the things that are important to our very survival are irrelevant, dogmatic hullabaloo meant only for dreamers and malcontents.
It's all going down, with or without me so I'm always looking for the best opportunity as the opportunities change.

It was a pleasure performing with all you chaps; now I'm off to the nearest lifeboat.

Most linehaul drivers make more than that with certainly better benefits. And that's with many sleeping in their own beds. That's how it is at my place, anyway. There's no way I'd hop around the country for weeks at a time to do dollar store deliveries. Anyone who does that definitely deserves to make big money. 100k is not even enough to do that in my opinion.

City jobs paying more than linehaul is a rarity in LTL. And it's for a reason (although I know that city is harder work, at least physically speaking). We have openings come up occasionally and the whole city board will pass on the position, despite a 20 - 30k bump in pay. It is difficult work for a whole other set of reasons.

If that ain't enough money then you better find a different career because that's about as good as your gonna get in trucking unless you work for ups.

I think it could be a great job for some people, and the money is definitely way better than most OTR jobs out there. I can see how that job could appeal to a certain kind of driver. I'm just saying that there are much easier jobs where you make more money and are home every day. UPS happens to be one of those jobs, but they aren't the only ones out there in that tier.

I think it's "enough" money, sure. Just not enough for what all is involved in that job. I'd rather see my family every day and do less work for more money. But my point isn't just about the money. I'm talking about personal quality of life. I will also gladly work for several hundred dollars less per week than that "jetset" gig pays to be with my family every day. I wouldn't even do it for $150k. That's just me, though.

Naptown, rodman71 and stevep1977 Thank this.

I thought everybody doing linehaul made a
100 grand and was home every night.
That's what everybody on this forum thinks.
    So what's the problem.

I think that works out to around 78k ... if you want to be home 6 weeks per year. Mebbe a bit more if you get a few weeks pd vac. Probably slip seating and probably working a lot of holidays.

    Keep reading this forum.
I think you'll find that, in less than five years (if not sooner), most of the really positive words will be all but gone.

Are you referring to ABF when you say that?
